A pioneering adventure Grapevines were planted in the north of Chile in the 16th century, in the wake of Spanish conquistadors.Production expanded rapidly and the country was soon exporting to Peru, challenging imported wines from Spain. The Echenique family, of Basque origin, planted vineyards in the Peralillo area of the Colchagua province around 1750 and in the 19th century, the same family was part of the rapid expansion that took place in Chilean wines, at the initiative of a handful of pioneers who were inspired by the French model. The first French grapes were planted in the Cañeten Valley of Colchagua in 1850 but when phylloxera ravaged Europe’s vineyards, Chile’s production increased dramatically. Vineyards went from 9,000 hectares in 1870 to 40,000 hectares in 1900. The first exports of wines to Europe took place in 1877. In 1947, production in the Cañeten Valley of the Peralillo region was reorganised and rationalised. Plots of land were cleared and prepared for planting, water supply Read more »

  • Los Vascos Reserve Cabernet 2008

    Snoothrank:

I say there is absolutely no differences between the Reserva and the regulara. This reminds me of a $10 2005 Bordeaux. Some cotton candy on the mid-palate. I would never guess this was a Cabernet. More like a south american pinot. Read More

  • Los Vascos Reserve Cabernet 2008

    Snoothrank:

A disappointment. Since when do Cabernet Sauvingnon's have such over-ripe cherry overtones? The nose was cherry cough drop+pepper, but the taste was watery and unpleasantly bitter. The finish?...well, there really wasn't a finish. Sorry, but I expected more, even though this was a $10 bottle. I won't buy it again. Read More

  • Los Vascos Chardonnay 2009

    Snoothrank:

Here's another wine with the backing of Domaines Barons de Rothschild. This one coming from a small valley within the Colchagua Province, Caneten Valley in Chile. Unfortunately, I can only give this wine 2 glasses. On the surface, it was pleasing to taste, but it shows a little more like a sauvignon blanc than a chardonnay. On the back of the bo... Read More
