A pioneering adventure Grapevines were planted in the north of Chile in the 16th century, in the wake of Spanish conquistadors.Production expanded rapidly and the country was soon exporting to Peru, challenging imported wines from Spain. The Echenique family, of Basque origin, planted vineyards in the Peralillo area of the Colchagua province around 1750 and in the 19th century, the same family was part of the rapid expansion that took place in Chilean wines, at the initiative of a handful of pioneers who were inspired by the French model. The first French grapes were planted in the Cañeten Valley of Colchagua in 1850 but when phylloxera ravaged Europe’s vineyards, Chile’s production increased dramatically. Vineyards went from 9,000 hectares in 1870 to 40,000 hectares in 1900. The first exports of wines to Europe took place in 1877. In 1947, production in the Cañeten Valley of the Peralillo region was reorganised and rationalised. Plots of land were cleared and prepared for planting, water supply Read more »

  • Los Vascos Reserve Cabernet 2008

    Snoothrank:

Dark ruby red. Aroma strong with cherries, blackberries and a touch of liquorice. Strong palate with chocolate and tobacco that is blended with oak and young tannins. Well balanced with a soft, subtle finish. Could probably use some more aging. I will try this again later. Read More

  • Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon 2009

    Snoothrank:

Pretty good for under ten, though there is a weird scent of band aids (love it, but it's still strange) and a little hot which gets in the way of the robust fruit that just peaks out from underneath. Read More

  • Los Vascos Reserve Cabernet 2008

    Snoothrank:

Chalky minerality on the nose. Lots of red and black berry fruit. Nose is rather tight on this. On the palate, it's got rich "warm" red berry fruit. Lots of flinty minerality. Some toasty oak. Hints of coffee grounds. Some bitter chocolate. It feels a tad gritty. Nice wine. Read More

  • Los Vascos Cabernet Sauvignon Domaine Barons de Rothschild 2007

    Snoothrank:

I think this wine is drinking really nice right now. More Bordeaux like than cab with a real taste of cab franc qualities. For the price, this is a real easy one. Read More

  • Los Vascos Sauvignon Blanc 2010

    Snoothrank:

Paired this one with fish tenders, lemon juice and hot sauce with a side of spanish yellow rice. this has a heavy citrus component that counteracted the lemon juice for the fish. mmmmmm Read More
