Im Jahre 1548 brachte der Spanische Priester Francisco de Carabantes die ersten Reben nach Chile. Etwa zur gleichen Zeit wurden in der nähe der Anden, in der damals unbewohnten Gegend um Curicó, die ersten wilden Weinstöcke der schwarzen Traube Moscatel (Muskat) entdeckt. Man schloss daraus, daß in Chile für den Weinanbau perfekte klimatische Bedingungen herrschen müssen. Der erste Winzer auf chilenischem Boden hieß damals Francisco de Aguirre, welcher auf seinem Land bei Copiapó die ersten Reben pflanzte um diese kommerziell zu nutzen und im Jahre 1551 die erste Weinlese einbrachte. Im allgemeinen herrscht in Chile ein gemäßigtes Klima. Sehr warme Sommer in denen fast kein Regen fällt. Tagestemperaturen bis zu 32 Grad Celsius welche Nachts um bis zu 17 Grad absinken können.
