The Vavasour family have a strong historical background. They can trace their ancestry back to the time of the Norman invasion of England. One of their ancestors is thought to have been a 'taster' for William the Conqueror. The rooster on the label is from the family crest, the emblem on the rooster is an indication of the family's lineage. The Vavasours arrived in New Zealand and established themselves in the Awatere Valley in 1890. Nearly a century later in the early 1980's Peter Vavasour took a keen interest in the viticultural developments of the Wairau Valley in Marlborough. After some research it was found that the climate and soils of the Awatere region were quite similar to those of the Wairau. In fact, the soil in the Awatere Valley is less fertile (this is a good thing) than the Wairau. Low fertility naturally restricts vigour in the vine. The Awatere Valley is also drier, and with no underground water the vines are bound to struggle. At Vavasour we can control the growth of Read more »

  • Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Dashwood 2011

    Snoothrank:

A big roasted pepper character on the nose thats both grassy and vegetal while remaining lively and freshly citrussy. Bright, lean and mineral on the palate with nice cut and a sweet edge of green kiwi fruit up front. Rather complete with nice length. Ripe, rich and zesty. 89pts Read More

  • Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

The aromatics are strong and expressive, displaying heavy tropical notes of fresh herbs, guava and a slight hint of grassiness. This wine is extremely crisp where you'll find flavors of passion fruit, grapefruit and guava without being overly sweet. These flavors are accompanied by a bright, mouthwatering acidity that begs you to take another si... Read More

  • Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

Very intense on the nose with typical aromas of grass and jalapeno over a core of light orchard fruits. Light-bodied in the mouth but very well-balanced, allowing the mostly herbal tones of the fruit to express themselves in the mouth while the overt fruit takes back seat until it re-emerges on the citrussy finish. 88pts Read More

  • Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc Awatere Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

The very definition of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Almost-shocking green bell pepper, jalapeno, and citrus on the nose, and from there, it's straight across the plate: tall grass, passionfruit, and long-lasting acidity so electric you could read by it. Read More

  • Vavasour Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough Dashwood 2008

    Snoothrank:

This is my favorite NZ SB in this price point. The lime, grapefruit and pineapple flavors blend well with pronounced minerality and slight green finish. High acid makes this uber food-friendly. Read More
