English immigrant Edward Tyrrell established Tyrrell’s Wines in 1858 in the lee of the Hunter Valley’s Brokenback Range, New South Wales. This land has become recognised as home to some of the Hunter Valley regions finest vineyards, and the basis for development of one of Australia’s most successful privately owned wine companies. Today, Tyrrell’s are a truly national wine company, premium vineyards extend from their legendary home in the Hunter Valley to other distinguished grape growing regions of Australia including McLaren Vale in South Australia and Heathcote in Victoria. Fourth generation family member and Managing Director, Bruce Tyrrell heads this winemaking company that boasts well established, popular and highly recognisable wine brands that are exported to over 30 countries worldwide. His children, the fifth generation of the Tyrrell family, are involved in the family business, illustrating that this iconic Hunter Valley winery will continue to be Australian owned well into the future Read more »

  • Grange isn't an everyday wine, however, several of Penfold's lesser wines fit the bill such as Koonunga Hill, Rawson's Retreat, and Thomas Hyland. Angoves Long Row,  Tyrrell's Lost Block, Paxton, McLaren Vale, Brockenchack Riesling- now possibly the best quality white wine for the money that will age, although Chateau Tahbilk Marsanne is similar... • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost... • In a previous posting, I had shared some of the white Rhone-styled wines Australia produces. In this first of 2/3 posts, I'll share my thoughts on the red wines. First up are the wines from New South Wales and South Australia. Basically, Hunter Valley and the Canberra District for NSW, and McLaren Vale, Barossa and Eden Valleys for SA. There was... Read More

  • There is a joke that I have been told...Q: What have a 65 year old woman and Australia got in common?A: Everybody knows it's down there, but nobody cares. In much the same way that the joke is in poor taste it seems that Australia's wines too have fallen our of favour with collectors since the early 90's, our cheap homogenised "critter" wines hav...
