Turley is a winery that focuses on small production “Big Red” wines from old vine Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, based in St. Helena in the Napa Valley, California. The winery is a family operation helmed brother and sister duo Larry and Helen Turley, founded in 1993. Their prestigious wines are in constantly high demand, and their private wine club has a two-year waiting list. The wines are produced from several vineyards, with vines dating back to the 1800s. Each terroir lends its own character to the wines, and they are given separate labels according to location each vintage. The vineyards are located in Napa, Sonoma, Paso Robles, Lodi, Howell Mountain and Contra Costa.

Fox asked me the other day if I was going to start a thread on this years growing season. I've been real busy with other things and haven't had much time to focus on the specifics of the 2013 season. But, things are getting off to an early start due to unusually warm Spring weather and a mild Winter where the Sierra snowpack is only 17% of norma... Read More

Zinfandel, it’s no secret that I’ve carried on a long and intimate ... finale. 91 points 2010 Turley Cellars Zinfandel Dogtown Vineyard Lodi 16.2% $61 Rather intense on the nose with dark, slightly toffeed berry fruit, toasty, creamy marshmallow notes topped with some stemmy spices notes and a little toasted coconut. Rather intense on the nose with dark, slightly toffeed berry fruit, toasty, creamy marshmallow notes topped with some stemmy spices notes and a little toasted coconut. This is fairly tannic, even if the wine itself is nicely medium to full bodied with bramble and slightly herbal inner mouth perfumes lending a Grenache-like quality to the strawbe... Read More

People always say the important is what is inside, but sometimes the package is very important, too. I really love the elegant and simple shape of the burgundy bottle, the rustic feeling of the Chianti fiasco, and the convenience of a piccolo of champagne. Read More

The Zinner party was last night, but preparations began a week or two ago when ... ... that featured a ton of Turley wines from different vineyards at really attractive prices. By the time I pulled the trigger, the best values appeared to be a 2001 Duarte Vineyard (Contra Costa County) and a 2003 Pesenti Vineyard (Paso Robles). Add to that ... Read More

I'm sitting around on this President's Day holiday (banks are closed, no postal delivery, stock markets are closed), and this popped into my mind. My recollection is that 30 or so years ago the only wine bottles that had punts in their bottom where for Champagne or other sparkling wines. Then punts started appearing in all kinds of still wines... Read More

In years gone by I have drunk a lot of Zin, but it is almost always consumed within 2-3 years of the harvest. I have let some high alcohol zins (specifically Opolo Mt Zin) go for 4 years and they had turned flabby and off tasting. Last night I came across a bottle of Seghesio Sonoma 2007, which is their cheapest and simplest zin, and had it. ... Read More

Saw this story about Antonio Galloni leaving the Wine Advocate. (I first saw it somewhere else, but this was the easiest one to link to today.) I haven't got any particular sense of what Galloni likes, although one kind of assumes that Parker would hire someone somewhat in his own image if he was planning to turn over some of the areas Bob has... Well, it's a momentous time for a couple of us snoothers. Hope OT doesn't mind me sharing that he made the Saxum list last week, while today I got my first offer to buy Shafer Hillside Select. Since I bought, I'm now on the list...think it was about a three year wait for each of us. So much for not buying wine until summer! Read More
