Trader Joe is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores that began in Pasadena, California and are now peppered across the United States. The first store, then called Pronto Markets, opened in 1958. In 1967 as the business expanded, founder Joe Coulombe changed the name to Trader Joe’s and began the trademark Hawaiian themed decor, complete with staff all wearing Hawaiian shirts. The stores specialize in private label food and grocery items, many of them certified organic and sustainable. Foods are labeled in whimsical accordance to the ethnicity of the products, i.e. “Trader Giotto’s” for Italian, “Trader José’s” for Mexican, “Trader Ming’s” for Chinese, etc. This direct supply method allows them to pass savings onto customers by keeping costs low. • Can't help find those wines from the past as I didn't drink them, but in addition to the advice above, you might want to look at anything called 'late harvest". That usually indicates sweetness. The wines of Sauternes are botrytis wines and CA is a pretty dry place for the most part and those wines require very specific conditions involving fog ... Read More

  • Now that the name Sauterne, is reserved for those wines from that region, how do I find the type of wine produced in the 1960's, that used to be labeled " Sauterne".This wine was from California and was an excellent compliment to poultry. I have no idea what wines to try. Thanks Read More

  • So, we were at Costco a few weeks ago and, surprise, stumbled into the wine section.  Several bottles found their way into the cart, when Peggy picked up an Oregon Riesling.  That is a bit unusual for her, but I also saw a German example.  We read what we could on the back labels and the shelf talkers.  The Oregon one was described as "dry" and ... • With Portland, Oreon finally feeling the warmth of Summer, I've opted for Bouchaine Vineyards Estate Chardonnay Carneros-Napa Valley. I normally don't buy wines under $10.00 yet when I saw this at Trader Joe's, it reminded me of my favorite Carneros so I thought I'd give it a try. What a delightful wine! Perfect for a Sunday afternoon trying to ... Read More

  • Last week I reported that I tried the 2013 Lyeth Meritage on our Thursday evening Hollywood Bowl picnic.  Over the weekend we were at Trader Joe's and, so, I picked up a couple more bottles.  Tonight, I am going to try another bottle to see if my previous positive opinion was tainted by our good spirits, that night. Last week I mentioned that I ... • We went to the Hollywood Bowl, last night.  It was, pretty much, a last minute decision, and we did not have the time or wherewithal to create our own picnic.  So, we made a Trader Joe's run to pick up things that would make a picnic--olives, cheeses, salmon spread, salame, some very nice roast beef, a "Rustic Italian" salad, potato salad, chocol...
