Trader Joe is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores that began in Pasadena, California and are now peppered across the United States. The first store, then called Pronto Markets, opened in 1958. In 1967 as the business expanded, founder Joe Coulombe changed the name to Trader Joe’s and began the trademark Hawaiian themed decor, complete with staff all wearing Hawaiian shirts. The stores specialize in private label food and grocery items, many of them certified organic and sustainable. Foods are labeled in whimsical accordance to the ethnicity of the products, i.e. “Trader Giotto’s” for Italian, “Trader José’s” for Mexican, “Trader Ming’s” for Chinese, etc. This direct supply method allows them to pass savings onto customers by keeping costs low. If an item doesn’t sell well, it is (often to the consternation of some customers) discontinued. A maritime bell is used as a means of communication (one bell = assistance Read more »

  • AZ Snoother, We don't hate, at least I don't!  When it comes to wine, I'm a fan of good wine from anywhere.  France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, the odd German and Aussie, heck, I had a Slovenian Furmint recently.  South African Chenin?  Got that.  It just has to be tasty and reasonably priced.EMark, although Smith Madrone is old and Terra Valentine... • Hoping that some of you might be able to help me out. I'm going down to AZ for vacation next week. I'm really only broadly planning which areas to go to now, and I really want to nail down some plans so I can have some idea of what we're doing! I know that there is some wine tourism in Arizona. Do you guys know anything about the wines or wineri... Read More

  • Hi Jack (oh no, now I'm on the No-Fly list),Jon is correct.  The vintage is important.  I made the mistake of buying a 1998 Bertani and held it for several years, and the vintage info implied that it wasn't excellent.  I opened it at Christmas (recently) and it was merely okay.  I have a 2000 Bertani that should be better.  2004 was a good year ... Good thing I have neighbors who can cook and who appreciate my wine...makes for a nice group effort. Not much time to go over everything in detail, but I continue to enjoy 2011 Barbera d'Alba, and also the 2011 Tommasi Soave that I picked up last minute was a real surprise. • Really funny, because I almost posted about that most recent offer for a different reason:  Rimmerman said that age of the EVOO didn't matter.  No doubt, the conditions of storage/shipping would make a much bigger difference than, say, six months of proper storage, but everything I have read and everyone I have talked to (and keep in mind I live... • I've followed a few threads here over the years about the pros and cons of Garagiste as a place to buy wine, so I thought this was a good place to share this story:Last summer I bought a bunch of EVOO from them. It came during a huge heat wave. I'd had oil from the producer before, and this shipment wasn't as good as I'd come to expect. It wasn'... Read More
