Trader Joe is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores that began in Pasadena, California and are now peppered across the United States. The first store, then called Pronto Markets, opened in 1958. • OK, as a Social Security pensioner, I'm as interested in <$20 wines as much as the next guy.  However, the attitude that the old world < $20 wines are ipso facto better than the < $20 domestic wines does not seem reasonable to me.It may very well be that the <$20 European wines that make it across the Atlantic are, generally, better that most of... • Sometimes we get used to paying upwards of $100 for a nice bottle of wine from the wine shop.  Those are the 'good days' that we want to remember, but soon you notice your bank account is dropping faster than Trumps approval rating, so you start looking for more value-oriented wines that are tasty in their own right. When you find a nice wine tha... • If you get a Ravera, you should make sure to get the Elvio Cogno as well.  The only winery IN the Ravera vineyard, and Valter and Nadia make a fantastic Barolo from it.  Actually, they make two.  Follow the link to a pretty decent article. And, Cogno bottles a pre-phylloxera Barbera that is hard to find over here, but is easily the best and most ... • I haven't played in this conversation for a while, mostly, because most of my purchases, lately, have been daily drinkers from places like Costco and Trader Joe's.Today we were over in Gardena.  Gardena does not have many claims to fame:  it was, I believe, the first community in Southern California to allow card casinos, it was the location of ... • Ahhh Zabar's is a classic. Sister-in-law has a place 2 blocks away. Lox to die for. Every cheese you could want (well, almost anyway). My favorite local is Trader Joe's. I even buy wine there sometimes (gasp!) I also shop Whole Foods occasionally.  Read More
