Trader Joe is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores that began in Pasadena, California and are now peppered across the United States. The first store, then called Pronto Markets, opened in 1958. In 1967 as the business expanded, founder Joe Coulombe changed the name to Trader Joe’s and began the trademark Hawaiian themed decor, complete with staff all wearing Hawaiian shirts. The stores specialize in private label food and grocery items, many of them certified organic and sustainable. Foods are labeled in whimsical accordance to the ethnicity of the products, i.e. “Trader Giotto’s” for Italian, “Trader José’s” for Mexican, “Trader Ming’s” for Chinese, etc. This direct supply method allows them to pass savings onto customers by keeping costs low. Trader Joe's on Snooth

  • Loire Valley is a treasure of well-priced wines.  SBs from Sancerre or Pouilly-Fume rarely disappoint.  I don't think I have any in inventory right now, but they are fairly easy to pick up.  I know we have a Trader Joe's visit in our near term future.  Trader Joe's  rarely sells the absolute top-of-the-line wines, but what they do sell is fairly... • EM, sounds like a Trader Joe's trip in your near future, and I need to open the above Sancere bottle within the next few days.  I wonder if I can pair it with nachos? Read More

  • I haven't posted here in a while, and I have no pictures.  On Thursday I picked up some everyday drinkers at Costco and Trader Joe's.  Nero d'Avalo, Bordeaux, Chianti, Dao, Ribiero del Duero, Pouilly-Fuisse, Meursaut, Soave and multiple of domestic Chardonnays.  FWIW, Trader Joe's has St. Clement Chardonnay for $9.99.  Peggy loves it, and, at th... • 2009 Medlock Ames Cabernet Sauvignon from Anderson Valley.Anderson Valley?  Not really CS country.  Look again, Al.C'mon, big guy.  You know we don't allow mistakes around here.  ;-)You do remind me, though, I forgot to brag on our dinner last night.  I'd made a Trader Joe's run and we grilled Lamb Chops and some Vegie Kabobs.  I absolutely love... • The question is what they mean by "California Wine".Some good producers do reduce alcohol - Randy Dunn for example. Lots of others don't admit to adding water, which is the way it's often done. But not everyone needs to de-alc and remember, California is a big place and some regions are doing better with the drought of the last few years than ar... Read More

  • OK, as a Social Security pensioner, I'm as interested in <$20 wines as much as the next guy.  However, the attitude that the old world < $20 wines are ipso facto better than the < $20 domestic wines does not seem reasonable to me.It may very well be that the <$20 European wines that make it across the Atlantic are, generally, better that most of... • Sometimes we get used to paying upwards of $100 for a nice bottle of wine from the wine shop.  Those are the 'good days' that we want to remember, but soon you notice your bank account is dropping faster than Trumps approval rating, so you start looking for more value-oriented wines that are tasty in their own right. This topic is all about value... • If you get a Ravera, you should make sure to get the Elvio Cogno as well.  The only winery IN the Ravera vineyard, and Valter and Nadia make a fantastic Barolo from it.  Actually, they make two.  Follow the link to a pretty decent article. And, Cogno bottles a pre-phylloxera Barbera that is hard to find over here, but is easily the best and most ... • I haven't played in this conversation for a while, mostly, because most of my purchases, lately, have been daily drinkers from places like Costco and Trader Joe's.Today we were over in Gardena.  Gardena does not have many claims to fame:  it was, I believe, the first community in Southern California to allow card casinos, it was the location of ...
