Trader Joe is a privately held chain of specialty grocery stores that began in Pasadena, California and are now peppered across the United States. The first store, then called Pronto Markets, opened in 1958. In 1967 as the business expanded, founder Joe Coulombe changed the name to Trader Joe’s and began the trademark Hawaiian themed decor, complete with staff all wearing Hawaiian shirts. The stores specialize in private label food and grocery items, many of them certified organic and sustainable. Foods are labeled in whimsical accordance to the ethnicity of the products, i.e. “Trader Giotto’s” for Italian, “Trader José’s” for Mexican, “Trader Ming’s” for Chinese, etc. This direct supply method allows them to pass savings onto customers by keeping costs low. If an item doesn’t sell well, it is (often to the consternation of some customers) discontinued. A maritime bell is used as a means of communication (one bell = assistance Read more »

  • Finding myself a little more curious as to what's going on at this price point lately, with neighbors looking to me for advice, and I did hear BLM's call recently as well.So two regions came to mind, not only for reasonable pricing, but for good overall quality potential. The Languedoc in the South of France, and Etna Rosso from the volcanic soi... Read More

  • SECRET SANTA: Thanks for the reply but you know that I am a free thinker so I'll just have to see for myself to catch up to where you are now.  Unless you being SECRETSANTA  you could surprise me with a gift of SANTA's favorite Pinot Noir. LOL just kidding. One more thing, if the Pinot Noir doesn't taste like the grape that's ok to me because...... Read More

  • Being aware of price points for most of the other varietals I have always wondered why the Pinot Noirs are always priced way ahead of the other varietals. It is almost impossible to purchase a Pinot Noir at the same price point/quality as a Cabernet Sauvignon for under $20Now I live in a region where both Cabernet Sauvignon (Washington State) and... • Hmm.  We'll have to see what March holds for the EMarks.  Typically, it is a very busy month.  We'll see.  Hey, my birthday is in April.Anyway we're going Italian, tonight. I bought this for not very many dollars at Trader Joe's a few years ago.  My quick analysis is that it is a perfectly fine drinking wine, but, certainly, not one that you wan... • RBA, cannot go wrong with almost anything from Drouhin, French or American - enjoy!EMark, from the TJ's web site - Block 67 Cabernet Sauvignon (“Block” for the box; “67” for the year Trader Joe’s was founded).  I would expect something a bit less interesting than the 2 (or 3) buck chuck. Stick with Robin's Apsara wines, more expensive but defini... Read More

  • RCKR, Thanks! But you did give me an idea. I've never actually developed my own list of these types of wines I mentioned. It would be several pages long and growing, as the fun part is always discovering new, different ones. Another thing I really like to do is discover American versions of the more unusual European varietals - like sangiovese, ... Read More

  • Welcome Seahawk.Boy, Liberty School is a name from the past.  My recollection (may or may not be correct) is that Liberty School was a second label for a fairly well-know, and well-respected, Napa Valley winery.  It may have been Caymus.  Whoever it was sold the brand years (probably, more like decades) ago.Lately, I have my own favorite low-dol... • Hi Folks! This site was really great several years ago helping me track down Corsican reds here in NYC (I'm in Staten Island.) Many of my friends, and myself included, are interested in very good wines (mostly reds)  at the lowest possible price. There really are many such wines out there if you look hard enough! For example, several years ago a ... Read More
