Torres is one of the world’s most recognizable brands of Spanish wine and is 100% family owned. The company was founded by Jaime and Miguel Torres in 1870, and is now overseen by 4th generation wine producer Miguel Angel Torres. The headquarters of the winery is in Vilafranca del Penèdes in Catalonia, although the family controls several wineries throughout Spain as well as Chile and California. The wines range from entry level premiums, such as Sangre de Toro (the one with the little bull charm on its neck), to quality-driven mid and higher priced ranges, as well as dessert wines and brandies.
A large percentage of the Torres vineyards are organic and sustainable, with efforts to increase those numbers. They also contribute to wildlife conservation efforts with a fund to protect the Bonelli's Eagle in Catalonia and the Condor in Chile.

  • Z - not tangential to wine!  Torres in Spain is buying land high up in the mountains in the expectation that in the future that will be warm vineyard land. Every wine maker I've ever talked to can see the changes in average ripening dates, etc.And our politicians are very willing to deny it and to claim that the "science" isn't proven.Unless it ... Had this last night with a steak. A huge and complex wine in its prime. Cork was crumbly, and had to decant the wine through a sieve, but that was the only complaint. Purple and opaque...powerful. Just a great glass. Read More

  • Mas la Plana. Torres 2010

Darkest Mediterranean cherry on the nose with musk and perhaps campfire smoke; the entry is deep cherry (100% Tempranillo) with a warm vanilla and slight bitterness (oak) on the back palate. The finish is medium and overall balance is very good. Nice for the price. 88 points. Read More

  • Torres Viña Esmeralda 2013

This wine is about 5 euros in Spain - an unbelievable bargain by North American standards. The nose is full of wild rose and other sweet garden flowers filled in by apricot and peach. The entry is quite smooth and luscious with more soft fruit such as peach and maybe a bit of lychee nut. Would pair nicely with seafood - especially cuttlefish ... Read More
