Tignanello is the “Super Tuscan” label produced by celebrated Italian wine producer Antinori. The Antinori family has produced wine in Tuscany for well over 600 years, since Giovanni di Piero Antinori joined the Arte Fiorentina dei Vinattieri in 1385. The winery has managed to stay in the family over the centuries, now under the direction of Marchese Piero Antinori, with help from his daughters Albiera, Allegra and Alessia.
Tignanello has been produced since the early 1970s in the vineyard of the same name, and is credited with being among the very first Super Tuscans. It is a blend of primarily Sangiovese with smaller percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. This makes it closer to a traditional Tuscan wine, the inverse of most Super Tuscans which balance more heavily on the Bordeaux grapes. It was one of the first wines in the region to be aged in small oak barrels to impart richer flavors.

Tignanello on Snooth

  • My first time with Tignanello, and while this not something I'd buy in bulk it was good to have the experience. Definitely good wine, and curious to try an older vintage.TN: Plum, fig, coffee, vanilla, and black cherries on the nose.Shows good acidity on entry, followed by fresh red and black fruit flavors, coating the mouth well with extract. • I looked at the wine list and I can't really tell what things cost because ... ... From the Italians, the Tignanello and Ceparello look like they are pretty close to US retail.  (I think the Tignanello especially is overpriced in the US, but at that price in a restaurant, I'd happily order it.)  If you haven't had it, Chateau Musar from Leban... Then traveling to the Hotel Ion for a 2 day stay where if lucky enough we will sit in their glass enclosed bar to view the Northern Lights. Hoping the Ion also has some fine wine for tasting. Will repo... Read More

  • Antinori Tignanello Ita 2008

Hold 2014-2024-The 2008 Tignanello is unquestionably one of the wines of the vintage. The 2008 isnt a huge or obvious Tignanello, rather it is a wine that impresses for its sublime elegance and precision. Understated layers of fruit caress the palate like cashmere in this impeccable, soft wine. There is not a hard edge to be found. Black cherrie... Read More

  • . . . and, boy, are my arms tired.I don't know when I first heard the term "Super Tuscan."  I'm guessing that it was 10-12 years ago.  I really did not know what it meant--me being very focussed on my California world.I did, of course, learn that a Super Tuscan was a wine that was made from grapes that were outside the Tuscany tradition--specifi...
