Holli and John Todhunter are passionate about life, love, wine and Italy! After years of study, research and planning Three Fox Vineyards was given birth from this passion back in 2002. Today Three Fox Vineyards sits on 50 rolling acres, very reminiscent of Tuscany or the Piemonte, in the heart of Northern Virginia’s horse country and the Mosby Heritage Area. Their love of Italian wine and food has taken the Todhunters on many trips to various parts of Italy to learn how wines are made in these different regions. The similar relaxed feel of Southern France has taken them there too. This Italian focus – with a bit of the south of France thrown in – led them to plant Sangiovese, Nebbiolo, Pinot Grigio – all Italian varietals – as well as Viognier, the main white wine grape of the Rhone Valley. On estate they also grow Cabernet Franc and Merlot, both of which are grown in many parts of Italy and France. Chardonnay, Vidal, and Chambourcin are sourced from areas growers. In a very Italian tradition Read more »

  • It's interesting that a few new topics have popped up recently (Experiencing Cabernet Franc for one) and that my wife Sandra just today handed me an article by Dave McIntyre she cut out of a Washington Post newspaper dated 25 March 2015.  I'm starting this new topic based on this article "The wine cost four digits.  And the taste?" regarding the... • nvesting in wine is by no means a new phenomenon. Many years before fine wine became truly global in the mid-1990s, wily buyers would often buy more than they intended to drink, selling the excess at a later date to fund new purchases.( im ni bt ca bright city)In today’s market, as the global demand and consumption of the World’s finest wines in... • I think OT had a thread in Berserkers all about pictures of vines and vineyards...tried to find one on here but came up short. There was some talk of Limerick Lane (has a nice ring to it) on here recently, I believe Mark has some of the wines. Just now I noticed a nice picture of some Limerick Lane Vineyard rows posted to Facebook by Adam of Sid... Read More

  • Okay, I get to take two quick trips this month.  First, we go to San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, and Cambria (more or less in that order).  We have one night in Pismo Beach that we can go out for dinner, and we can do a very limited amount of wine tasting because we will have the kids.  So, where do we have dinner in Pismo?  If we eat out in Cambr... • Montalcino is a beautiful medieval hilltop village just 40 miles south of Siena, on the ancient roadway to Rome. It is dominated by a castle, called La Fortezza, which doubles as an enoteca and wine shop. • I once, a few years back, almost pulled the trigger on a real estate purchase in the hills back behind the Big Sur coastline. Was reminiscing on that today, and wondered why I never hear about wine from that area. Is it because I'm so far away and out of touch and there actually are barrels and barrels of wine being made there, or because the cu... Read More

  • Mt. Etna is located in northeastern Sicily in the province of Catania. Viticulture on the lower slopes of Mt. Etna dates back millennia. We live, however, in an age where we want to know what you have done for me lately. That’s good news for Etna’s DOC wines. Winemaking on Europe’s most active volcano is hot, both literally and figuratively. Etn... Read More

  • It always seemed odd to us that in Piemonte, the land of Barolo, the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings, we would always find a bottle of Barbera in front of us on the table. The answer was and is simple: Barbera is bountiful, versatile, delicious and moderate in price. The Piemontesi drink more reds than whites and almost 50% of the reds that ... Read More

  • After much agony and discernment, I have chosen the official wine for my Super Bowl party this year. Over the 9 years I've hosted this event, it is probably the least exotic selection, not to mention least expensive.  Given the fact chili is the main dish (oh please, don't turn your nose. After all, we're American pigskin fans, not Bolsheviks), ... Read More
