The Ranch Winery on Snooth

  • When we last left off, we had completed a loop of northeastern Sonoma, leaving a lot of unexplored country out there! Today’s trip will lead us out of Santa Rosa heading to the west, right smack dab through the famous Russian River Valley!Any visit to Sonoma wouldn’t be complete without a look at some of the truly iconic regions, and the Russian... • When I think of Sonoma, my thoughts naturally drift off to the great wines that so many of us enjoy. Pinot Noir has become somewhat of a poster child for Sonoma’s red wines -- just think of the Sonoma Coast and Russian River Valley and the first thought that comes to mind may very well be Pinot. (If it’s not, you may want to check out my previou... Read More

  • The wife & I are making our first trip to Napa for a two day excursion.  We have been doing a lot of research, including reading up on the previous forum posts, thanks Honda John for your informative essay!  We're a little worried about going during the summer, and on a weekend, but it was the only time it worked for us, especially since we live... • Being a fan of Pinot Noir from Burgundy, Cabernet and Merlot from the left and right banks of Bordeaux and Rhone varietals from, you guessed it, the Rhone valley, I've had trouble finding wines that I really like from California. Sure there have been a number of very good, and occasionally great, bottles, but my experience has been about a 20% a... Read More

  • I just found out that this Paso Robles winery is out of business.  Very sad!  I have a couple of bottles of their Cabernet Etrusco, which I really liked, esp at a bargain price.  I hope the economy picks up before we lose too many more.Anybody else lost one of their favorite small wineries to this recession....? • It was at Vinify Wine Service in Santa Rosa Calif which is a custom crush facility where many small Sonoma County Boutique wineries make their wares. 19 wine makers pouring 72 different bottlings. Made it about 2/3 through the presentation before I started getting palate fatigue and everything started tasting alike. Lots of good Pinots, a couple... Read More

  • Our last day was supposed to be a half day with us getting on the road by lunchtime.  We had an appointment first to meet with Mark Neal at his home/winery on Howell Mountain.  It's a very curvy drive with some spectacular views down onto Napa Valley.  He's up near Ladera.  It's a beautiful property and Mark was just finishing up with another co... • My father started the tradition when my nieces and nephew were born.  He did it for my daughter too with a 1981 Cabernet. Now she is having a child and I'd like to continue the tradition.  I know it's still early for 2010 wines, but I thought I'd get this started. Any recommendations for a 2010 red wine that should age WELL for the next 21 years?...
