Yeah, I'd guessed Sacramento from your handle and the humidity. I grew up in the Santa Barbara/Ojai area. Similar architecture, but nowhere near that humidity...

Smoky and reduced on the nose. With air this opens to reveal notes of mineral, eggshell, clay and smoldering herbs over a core of meat, dark, concentrated fruit, smelling a bit like veal reduction. In the mouth this is...

Definitely head to Santa Barbara, and try some winebars and eating in the town ... Hills. Even back down in the Ojai direction. Make more than one trip, and take your time. Think up any number of excuses for road trips!...

funky sweaty leather, intense, earthy, savory escargot, some raw coconutty wood here, boysenberry juice, lots of forest floor. Great complexity with only a subtle fruitiness. Very finely focused in the mouth with lots of...

Ojai Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard 2005

Starting at $37.50 Snoothrank: 4/5

Starting at $37.50 Snoothrank: 4/5

Ojai Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard 2005

Starting at $37.50 Snoothrank: 4/5

A nice meaty nose bursting with dark fruits. Very fruity, very nice - lots of structure, tastes like there's some cab which is giving it that structure.

Ojai Syrah Bien Nacido Vineyard 2005

enveloped with blackberries, plums, jams, and baked spices. powerful and hot.

Ojai Vineyard Syrah Santa Barbara County 2005

Starting at $24.99 Snoothrank: 3.5/5

I found Patterson's survey a bit spotty and fuzzy (perhaps it's the Berkely ... World regions (such as the Ojai/Santa Barbara areas), and a few reds. But staying with my first grouping, the wines have an element of chalk...
