Terra D'oro on Snooth

  • We had a vaguely Chinese dinner of noodles, lamb and spinach, so we went for a white.  We had a Terra d'Oro chenin/viognier under VacuVin and finished that off.  We're getting closer to the three to five month move out, so we are running down our stock (which got a little harder with the weekend purchases in Amador County). • Terra d'Oro wines are the more expensive, but their wines are generally really reasonable. The story behind the winery is that Walter Field's daughter married Cary Gott (the father of Joel Gott and the son of a winemaker himself), so Walter Field moved to the mountains to be near his daughter.  He bought the land, and Cary Gott started making th... • Very excellent essay, Fox.  Thank you, very much. Can you explain the diferentiation in the Terra d'Oro/Montevina labels?  At first I was going to guess that theTerra d'Oro label was used for wines made from "Italian" grapes, and Montevina was used on wines made from "California grapes that everybody else uses,"  but it is not that simple.  It ap... • Not a good time to bring up the Clips again.  Ouch.Okay, Terra d'Oro Barbera from our excursion.  Thought I wouldn't have a lot of thirst after tasting close to 20 wines today (i know, amateur level), but we finished the bottle.  Then my wife's group drank part of a bottle of Lyrarakis Kostifali, a red from Crete that is like a much better versi... • "When the moon hits your eye/like a big pizza pie/that's amore."As we ate our breakfast on Sunday morning at the Imperial Hotel in Amador City, the soundtrack subtly changed.  Last night at dinner and halfway through breakfast, the soundtrack was from the same era, but Sam Cooke sent us, and Ray Charles warned us about women.  This morning, with... • Outhere has a pretty good list of recommendations. I especially enjoy the Dashe, then the Seghesio. I find that you really can't go wrong with Zinfandel's from the Dry Creek region. I might add Terra D'Oro as an option because of it's price point and consistency in addition to it's relatively strong availability. A couple of other suggestions in... Read More

  • I believe that folks might already have gleaned that I am somewhat of a Zinfandel fanatic but some of my previous posts. In truth my job has resulted in my drinking less, not more Zin but left to my own devises that would not be the case. Zinfandel remains for me the greatest American wine, both for the sheer joyousness of the wine and the histo... Read More

  • Terra d'Oro Zinfandel Deaver Ranch Amador County 2011

    Snoothrank:

Big and jammy on the nose with lots of dark fruit, damp tobacco and earth aromas along with a touch of oak spice. Smooth, rich and focused in the mouth with mulberry and black plummy fruit underpinned by some wood tannin. Oak shows up a bit on the backend with creamy milk chocolate and cinnamon flavors finishing with black cherry, leather, and c... Read More
