After 50 years in the wine industry, wine is still an inspiration for me. Every vintage brings an anticipation and excitement. After all, it’s a new birth. When I discovered Pinot Grigio in Italy, I was taken by its fresh aromas, its crispness, freshness and the way it paired effortlessly with foods. It was virtually unknown when I brought it to the United States in 1979. Not surprisingly, an entire nation of wine drinkers embraced Pinot Grigio for the same reasons I did. Today Pinot Grigio is the most requested wine in fine restaurants, and Santa Margherita Pinot Grigio is the quality leader for the varietal. The U.S. was introduced to a new wine, as well as a new level of quality from Italy. I still feel about it today the same way I did the first time I tasted it. When I tasted Syrah from the Rhone Valley, dense, rich and aromatic, it immediately captured my fascination as well. It was a wine that I knew could stand alongside the best of another classic, Cabernet Sauvignon, because the taste Read more »

    Snoothrank:

Drank it last night...has kept its meaty body-- velvety mouthfeel with flavors of dark ripe cassis berries and black plum. Hints of smoke, tobacco and earth. Surprisingly well structured, layering its multiple personalities with each new glass. Read More

  • Top Chef Pinot Noir 2010

    Snoothrank:

Rich, fleshy black cherry fruit greets the nose along with a touch of meatiness, some finely nuanced oak spice notes all laid out over a base of subtle earth and mushroom. Soft and round on entry, this gains tension in the mouth on the mid-palate with some cheek grabbing tannins. the fruit mirrors the nose with its earth bent, black cherry, cola... Read More

  • Terlato Vineyards Galaxy Red 2009

    Snoothrank:

Tight and low on the nose with subtle aromas of milk chocolate and dried herbs adding detail to the vanilla and sweet black cherry core on the nose. The oak is well used here but does lend a notable baking spice quality, toasty and sweet to the nose. Rather cool and focused in the mouth, deep with fine acids and polished tannins supporting subtl... Read More

  • Terlato Family Vineyards Pinot Grigio 2011

    Snoothrank:

Spicy on the nose with a touch of wood helping to frame the core of heirloom apple fruit and stony minerality. Relatively big and fruity in the mouth, this offers a lovely sweet/bitter counterpoint in the mouth with fine depth to the slightly creamy flavors of green apples and pears that dominate the palate along with a vein of jammy berry fruit...
