The Tasca d'Almerita estate is situated in the Sclafani countryside, between the provinces of Palermo and Caltanissetta, near the former stronghold of Regaleali: 1200 hectars of land were reduced to 500 following the agrarian reform in 1950. The 400 hectares of vineyards are between landscapes of almond trees and olive trees, and among this expanse there are wheat, oat and eucalyptus plants, that create a rural landscape of rare charm and beauty. It is a striking and unmistakable site, which enjoys a microclimate ideal for wine cultivation thanks to an altitude that varies between 400 to 750 meters and temperature range that averages about 15 Celsius degrees at night. The careful safeguarding of the grapes aromatic properties, which give the wines a characteristic elegance and distinctiveness, is a result of a rather late maturation process, as well as careful vine selection and solid winemaking, practiced in this area since 1100. – Description from dvoristanac

  • Time to do a little cellar cleaning and what better way to start than with the odds and ends of Italian wines that have been building up in the basement. Sadly theres no real cohesive theme here, though a few varieties do appear more than once among the tasting notes that follow. There’s not even a pricing paradigm that’s  useful here, though mo... Tight and focused on the nose with some waxy notes and hints of apricot pits followed by effusive white flowers, hints of cotton candy, mint and ginseng. Rich in the mouth but at the same time this is rather clear on the palate, light and fresh, if not particularly bright. The fruit is beautifully detailed with notes of citrus, raw cashew, sugg... This is lovely, with enough acid to be bright and juicy but not so much as to tire the palate. there's fine fruit here, a bit subtle perhaps but nicely framed with mineral and ve... Read More

  • Malvasia Tasca d'Almerita Edelsüß I.g.t. Italien Tasca d'Almerita 2008

Reddish brown and opaque in color, this wine had a pretty incredible nose. It was earthy, toasty (like raisins dried under the sun), plush juicy fruits of ripe red cherry and cantaloupe with hints of dried Shitake mushrooms. At first sip, I thought it needed time to open up. But upon some decanting, the butterscotch, toasted caramel, plush juici... Read More

  • Tasca d'Almerita Red Blend Contea di Sclafani Rosso del Conte 1991
