Sweeney Canyon is a small, family owned and operated vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County. It was planted by the Marks family, beginning in 1980, and we have farmed it continuously ever since, supplying Chardonnay grapes to such wineries as Babcock, Brewer-Clifton, Firestone, Gainey, LaFond, Longoria, Melville, Sanford, and Santa Barbara. The vineyard was planted to 18.5 acres of the Wente clone, on its own roots in the deep, gravely loam of the Santa Ynez River. The vines have been “dry-farmed” for more than 20 years. Growing on a bench overlooking the river, they sink their roots deep into the alluvium, and give their fruit rich and complex flavors unique to this locale. The results are wines both graceful and powerful in aromatics, fruit flavors, acidity and texture. Throughout this time, we have made small amounts of wine for our own consumption, both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, from cuttings we made ourselves. However, in the hands of people like Helen Turley, chardonnay can be fully malo'd, fermented in oak, and packed with delicious ripe fruit flavor. Brewe... Read More

  • A ridiculous number of trigger pullworthies in this new offering, many in their absolute drinking prime. Wish the shop was just down the street from me, rather than the ones that are. But then I'd have to live in NYC.  ;-(I love it when a guy drops 100 cases on a shop, just to 'make some space" in his cellar. Wonder what's going to be filling th... Read More

  • Is it me, or are oaky chards out of fashion? Nowadays most every producer I encounter boasts about their stainless steel tanks. All I want to experience with my Chardonnay is toast with a big ol' pad of melted butter on top. Can anyone recommend some excellent oaky chard producers? Thanks!  Read More

  • Perhaps we could use a place to share recent purchases...Here are some '12 Burlotto Langhe Nebbiolo, which came highly recommended from a trusted friend who just got back from a month in Italy. I'm not seeing many available in the States quite yet, but was happy to find these locally. Read More
