Summers Winery

Jim Summers purchased a 28-acre vineyard in Knights Valley in 1987. At that time it was mostly Merlot grapes with some Muscat Canelli. The first production of Summers Ranch Merlot was the 1992 vintage, and we increased the yield to reach a maximum of 2000 cases. In 1996 we expanded our vineyard holdings to include 25 acres at the corner of Highway 128 and Tubbs Lane. This Napa Valley property carries the name Summers Estate Wines, with the vineyard designation of Villa Andriana Vineyard, named after our daughter. The property has been completely transformed to recognize its full potential. With a winery/tasting room, entertainment center, bocce ball court, picnic area and 22+ acres of vines (Zinfandel, Charbono, and Cabernet Sauvignon) we think it a perfect balance of pleasure and productivity. Creating red-wine from grapes grown on small acreages in both Napa Valley and Knights Valley is the passion of Beth and Jim Summers. The signature, "unique" wine offered by Summers is Charbono. • Summers Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Reserve 2010

    Snoothrank:

Cocoa, coconut, mocha, and lovely herb notes come together on the nose here which also shows off some peppery spice and attractive blackcurrant and light peach aromas. This is smooth and a touch soft, with lower acidity than the basic Calistoga cuvée. The fruit is also a bit more intense, slightly chewy with blackcurrant flavors wrapped around to... Read More

  • Summers Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga Napa Valley 2010

    Snoothrank:

A nice minty, herbaceous edge greets the nose, adding freshness here to the slightly oaky and hard dark currant fruit. This smells unforgiving. Tight on entry, there's a good amount of fruit here, but this is not fleshy and plump but rather focused and crisp, medium weight with black cherry and currant fruit topped with a hint of mint and laid o... • Alves de Sousa Quinta da Gaivosa Lbv Port 1999

    Snoothrank:

Port wine hails from the Douro valley in central Portugal, a region connected by the Douro River to the (appropriately named) port city of Porto. The production and export of Port wine remains a pillar of the Portuguese economy, and its historical role was so crucial that the region of Douro was demarcated as the worlds first wine region in 1756... • After a quick tour of the winery, we settled in at the bar and sampled a couple of Remy’s fantastic single vineyard Italian varietal wines: The 2009 Illahe Vineyard Oregon Lagrein and the 2009 Rosebud Vineyard Washington Barbera. The Lagrein was a super dark and inky red color in the glass with a glowing halo of bright ruby red. Vibrant aromas o... Read More

  • Summers Winery Merlot Knights Valley 2009

    Snoothrank:

This is fairly tight on the nose showing focused vanilla, cured tobacco and floral topped cherry fruit. This is a rather structured Merlot, nicely firm int he mouth with early candied berry fruit flavors that are quickly wrapped up in well used oak and some stiff mineral tones. There's real depth of fruit on the palate with a nice spicy overlay ... Read More
