Summers Winery

Jim Summers purchased a 28-acre vineyard in Knights Valley in 1987. At that time it was mostly Merlot grapes with some Muscat Canelli. The first production of Summers Ranch Merlot was the 1992 vintage, and we increased the yield to reach a maximum of 2000 cases. In 1996 we expanded our vineyard holdings to include 25 acres at the corner of Highway 128 and Tubbs Lane. This Napa Valley property carries the name Summers Estate Wines, with the vineyard designation of Villa Andriana Vineyard, named after our daughter. The property has been completely transformed to recognize its full potential. With a winery/tasting room, entertainment center, bocce ball court, picnic area and 22+ acres of vines (Zinfandel, Charbono, and Cabernet Sauvignon) we think it a perfect balance of pleasure and productivity. Creating red-wine from grapes grown on small acreages in both Napa Valley and Knights Valley is the passion of Beth and Jim Summers. The signature, "unique" wine offered by Summers is Charbono. • Summers Petite Sirah 2009

Dark and earthy on the nose with aromas of macerating flowers and damp tobacco layered over a base of black cherry and blackberry fruit framed with some well judged vanilla and wood spice. Smooth, polished and yet not detailess in the mouth with lovely bright yet integrated acids and soft, supple yet obvious tannins. theres a streak of dark choc... Read More

  • Summers Merlot Reserve Summers Ranch 2010

Fairly floral on the nose with lots of perfumed oak aromas framing a core of bright, spicy blackberry and lingonberry fruit. This really flows across the palate with an excellent blend of richness of fruit and firmness of structure. The acids are a touch low, lending this additional weight in the mouth but the tannins, copious as they may be, ar... Read More

  • While traveling through Napa Valley last month I noticed that all the Vineyards I visited had roses planted around their crops. They're planted and watched closely for any early signs of infestation on the land. They monitor the Roses closely and upon early signs of problems, protective measures are taken to make sure the grape vines receive a s... • Elsewhere you can read about the offline I attended with OT and GdP and a bunch of winemakers, winelovers, and the like.  But on the way there, I think I solved a major problem with California wine; over conversation with GdP and an assistant winemaker from Napa, my belief was confirmed.I read in an obituary of Aldo Conterno that he had come to ... • Summers Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Reserve 2010

Cocoa, coconut, mocha, and lovely herb notes come together on the nose here which also shows off some peppery spice and attractive blackcurrant and light peach aromas. This is smooth and a touch soft, with lower acidity than the basic Calistoga cuvée. The fruit is also a bit more intense, slightly chewy with blackcurrant flavors wrapped around to... Read More

  • Summers Cabernet Sauvignon Calistoga Napa Valley 2010

A nice minty, herbaceous edge greets the nose, adding freshness here to the slightly oaky and hard dark currant fruit. This smells unforgiving. Tight on entry, there's a good amount of fruit here, but this is not fleshy and plump but rather focused and crisp, medium weight with black cherry and currant fruit topped with a hint of mint and laid o...
