Nestled among the rolling hillsides of the Missouri River, in a countryside reminiscent of Germany's Rhine Valley, is the little town of Hermann. Perched prominently on one of these hills, with a commanding view of the village, is Stone Hill Winery. Established in 1847, Stone Hill grew to be the second largest winery in the United States. The wines were world renowned, winning gold medals in eight world's fairs, including Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876. By the turn of the century, the winery was shipping 1,250,000 gallons of wine per year. – Description from Dragac

  • Mr Prof and I went with another couple.  I’ve given our overall evaluation as a group which was pretty consistent.  I went with the idea of signing up for a wine club membership if I found one I liked, and I ended up picking two: Vina Robles and Dark Star.  I didn’t write up my specific tasting notes on each wine, because a) I’m still pretty ine... I've included my notes below, broken down by visit in roughly chronological order. As you can see not everyone was able to present the 2009 Barolo for each of t... Read More

  • So I am going to Napa tomorrow for a few days.  I have some prearranged plans that cannot be changed, but have some limited  time for tasting. As "napagirl", I should already know exactly where to go.  The problem is, I get stuck into that rut of going to the ones I like, the old faves, over and over.  I would love to hear your recommendations an... • Like Zinfandel, Petite Sirah is primarily a California wine: the Golden State’s long, sunny growing seasons are necessary to ripen Petite Sirah’s substantial tannins and reveal its rich blackberry flavors. The wine’s structure, fruit and inky color make it an excellent blending partner for Zinfandel, red Rhône varieties and even Cabernet Sauvign... Read More

  • So, I was at a pre-performance dinner before an opera this weekend and a fellow diner/patron told me that her household is in love with a wine named Checkerboard. I've read a little on the interwebs and so far it sounds good. I was wondering if any of you Snoothers had tried this stuff and could provide any feedback. What does it most clearly com... Read More

  • Zinfandel, it’s no secret that I’ve carried on a long and intimate relationship with you. There is so much you have to offer. Sometimes you're a bit rough and tumble, edgy, even dangerous, while other times you’re coy or playful. But you’re always there for me, with joyous fruit, classic bramble notes and structure, allowing for early consumptio... Read More
