Nestled among the rolling hillsides of the Missouri River, in a countryside reminiscent of Germany's Rhine Valley, is the little town of Hermann. Perched prominently on one of these hills, with a commanding view of the village, is Stone Hill Winery. Established in 1847, Stone Hill grew to be the second largest winery in the United States. The wines were world renowned, winning gold medals in eight world's fairs, including Vienna in 1873 and Philadelphia in 1876. By the turn of the century, the winery was shipping 1,250,000 gallons of wine per year. – Description from Dragac

  • This morning I was pontificating in the coffee shop about wine bottle labeling.  My buddy, being the the ex-lawyer type, asked a lawyer question.  Who monitors this stuff?I then realized that I had never heard of anybody (OK, I'm talking domestically, here.) being accused of say:Labeling a bottle as "Cabernet Sauvignon" and, then, being caught f... • Anyone have any experience?I've noticed Kelley mentioned among the best company in Oregon Pinot, popular with Somm's and the like. Being a Burgundy lover, I've mostly found CA Pinot painful (though I've found a few I like!), and Oregon Pinot quite a bit more elegant, but sometimes or most of the time more boring rather than painful (as I find wi... • Thought I'd start a topic to see what "different" wines people are drinking. I've been on a hunt to find wines made from lesser known grapes or from unusual areas. Here's one of each. This is a rose made from Cinsault, not too unusual right? Well this is from the Bekaa Valley in Lebanon. Either they don't make very good wine in Lebanon or this bo... Read More

  • Thought this was an interesting mailer I'd share with you all. Already forwarded the e-mail to Fox as he is one of the few champions of Dolcetto that I know. This would also fit in well with the "weekday wines" thread. Fox and I agreeing it's a good week day pasta night wine, or even a 1st wine in a flight of Northern Italian Reds. To all Best W... • Hey everyone, what are some of your favorite 'everyday' or M-F types of wines to accompany a regular dinner?  I personally have enjoyed the Montoya Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, and I usually pick it up from Total Wines out here in Virginia.  This is one of those fruit-forward cabs that isn't too complex for me to appreciate, and it usually cost... • California, the land of sunshine, free spirits, and big wines. Right? Yes, of course, all that is true but today we are seeing that free spirited attitude change the paradigm for wine production.
