The vineyards at the Stolpman estate enjoy the warm days and cool nights of Ballard Canyon, which lies 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County, on California’s Central Coast. The combination of climate, southern exposure, and limestone soils makes for a unique terroir suited to growing Syrah, Sangiovese, and Roussanne. The first vines were planted at Stolpman in 1992 by Coastal Vineyard Care Associates, who continue to farm and develop the 220-acre estate. We are constantly improving our vineyards according to the latest information available about viticultural techniques, technology, vine material and our specific terroir. – Description from iskicm

  • Made a trip to Pahrump Nevada today to play a round of golf with my friends at Mountain Falls GC. Amazing course! Rated #1 in Nevada and the #7 public course in America. Who would have thought a course that nice could be located smack dab in the middle of basically no-mans land.Because the trip is 45 minutes from Vegas, I decided to visit the wi... Read More

  • One of Syrah’s problem with consumers has always been the savory nature of the wine that is often coupled with some aggressive tannins. The solution to both issues, if and when they are viewed as problems, has been to get Syrah so ripe that it is all about fruit, has minimal tannins, and at the same time low acidity and no real complexity. As a ... Read More

  • Stolpman Syrah Originals 2012

    Snoothrank:

92 acres of Syrah. Clones from Cornas and Cote Rotie are now in the vineyard but these original vines are moderately old vines, old for the region, 18-20 years old. Deeply fruited with hints of vanilla stemmy hints, mineral base notes adding complexity to the core of fresh plummy and red tinged fruit. Velvety and dark on the palate with a bit of... Read More

  • Stolpman Syrah "Originals" Santa Ynez Valley 2008

    Snoothrank:

Woody, somewhat fruityberriesnose. Whoapractically, no fruit to speak of on introduction to the palatealmost a neutral sensation. Some tartnessreminiscent of plumon the edges of the tongue, then something of a hit of tannin. Interestingly, most of the flavor of this on is way in the back of the palate. Read More

  • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • Yup, it was Mauritson, Fox.  Oh boy, fun tonight.  Staying on the Syrah topic, today's delivery included the '12 Madrone Spring, but I also picked the '12 Madrone Spring PS which I am pretty excited to try.On the Central Coast thing, I might fight you a bit on that.  I have never tried a Stolpman.  So, I really don't have a vote, there, but I do... • Hi all!Hoping to wade into interesting wine talk (and food talk).  Me, I've been seriously enjoying and exploring wine for just over 20 years. On the red side, right now I'm partial to wines from Spain and the Rhone valley, but other loves are Oregon pinots, really good Italian wines (yes, it's endless, but that's the fun), and wanting to try mu... • Well known producer with broad distribution.  Definitely one of the bigger names in Rhone grapes on the Central Coast, along with Stolpman, Qupe, Tablas Creek, some others that escape me.  I bought and enjoyed a rose of theirs some years ago.  I had the blend--probably the same one you bought--and have no memory of it.  Guessing it was inoffensi...
