The vineyards at the Stolpman estate enjoy the warm days and cool nights of Ballard Canyon, which lies 25 miles from the Pacific Ocean in Santa Barbara County, on California’s Central Coast. The combination of climate, southern exposure, and limestone soils makes for a unique terroir suited to growing Syrah, Sangiovese, and Roussanne. The first vines were planted at Stolpman in 1992 by Coastal Vineyard Care Associates, who continue to farm and develop the 220-acre estate. We are constantly improving our vineyards according to the latest information available about viticultural techniques, technology, vine material and our specific terroir. – Description from iskicm

  • Thanks for the mention Outthere! Greatly appreciated.Grenache in the US is certainly on the rise at this time. One must remember that before the mid 1990's, our plant materials were not that good - generally bigger cluster, bigger berry clones that one was able to crop heavily in order to make simple, fruity wines from. That changed with Tablas C... • On and off with differing frequency mention is made on these boards of garnacha as a choice for certain palates, and in certain contexts. Most of the mention here is pretty generic, and doesn't get down to any level of detail.Would like to suggest we take up the subject of wines from this grape with better focus. Where is good, who makes the goo... Read More

  • Made a trip to Pahrump Nevada today to play a round of golf with my friends at Mountain Falls GC. Amazing course! Rated #1 in Nevada and the #7 public course in America. Who would have thought a course that nice could be located smack dab in the middle of basically no-mans land.Because the trip is 45 minutes from Vegas, I decided to visit the wi... Read More

  • One of Syrah’s problem with consumers has always been the savory nature of the wine that is often coupled with some aggressive tannins. The solution to both issues, if and when they are viewed as problems, has been to get Syrah so ripe that it is all about fruit, has minimal tannins, and at the same time low acidity and no real complexity. As a ... Read More

  • Stolpman Syrah Originals 2012

92 acres of Syrah. Clones from Cornas and Cote Rotie are now in the vineyard but these original vines are moderately old vines, old for the region, 18-20 years old. Deeply fruited with hints of vanilla stemmy hints, mineral base notes adding complexity to the core of fresh plummy and red tinged fruit. Velvety and dark on the palate with a bit of... Read More

  • Stolpman Syrah "Originals" Santa Ynez Valley 2008

Woody, somewhat fruityberriesnose. Whoapractically, no fruit to speak of on introduction to the palatealmost a neutral sensation. Some tartnessreminiscent of plumon the edges of the tongue, then something of a hit of tannin. Interestingly, most of the flavor of this on is way in the back of the palate. Read More
