St. Urbans-Hof

Although vineyards had belonged to the Weis family for centuries, Nicolaus Weis (vintage 1905, Nik Weis' grandfather) founded the winery in 1947. In the early years he built cellars and winery buildings on a hill on Leiwen's periphery. He named his estate for the patron saint of German winemakers, St. Urban, and 'hof' (the German word for 'estate'), St. Urban's Estate. In the 1960s his son, Hermann, assumed management of all operations. During Hermann's tenure the nursery expanded to become one of Germany's largest. He established himself as a world-recognized vine breeder, especially noted for his work with Riesling. At the beginning of the 1970s he pioneered the use of this noble variety in Canada greatly contributing to the introduction of vitis vinifera into this country still new to quality winemaking. He planted the first large parcel of Riesling vines in the Niagara Peninsula under the title of St. Urban Vineyard, later to become Vineland Estates Winery. Hermann Read more »

  • St. Urbans-Hof Riesling Qba 2010

    Snoothrank:

Definitely some little effervescent bubbles as you pour. The nose lacks in complexity but what I do get is some nutty notes mixed in with a slight hint of dried apricot.Silky sweetness on the palette and easy drinking Read More

  • St. Urbans-Hof Riesling Trocken 2009

    Snoothrank:

As a steadfast drinker of big reds, this is nevertheless my favorite white--and maybe favorite everyday wine--of late. A deliciously drinkable, thirst-quenching Riesling, it falls just a bit on the sweet side, but never cloyingly so; it is so good on its own or with meals favoring a white that I'm nearly converted from insisting on an Italian or... • Crane Lake Gewürztraminer California 2009

    Snoothrank:

At less than $5 a bottle, this is an absolutely delicious white; in my tasting, it is comparable to and reminiscent of the excellent Riesling of St. Urbans-Hof (http://www.snooth.com/wine/st-urbans-hof-riesling-2009/) at a third of the price. Read More

    Snoothrank:

I rarely buy more than one bottle of ANY wine even if it's great...I've now bought 4 bottles of this riesling...this wine distinguishes the difference between one note american riesling (which should never be rated over an 89) and true German rieslings which are symphonies of fruit...this wine is just a mouthful of fruit...a super riesling at a ... • St. Urbans-Hof Bockstein Spatlese 2009

    Snoothrank:

90 points. This wines aroma is very floral with tons of jasmine components, a coffee bean aroma, and a faint chemical quality. There is some trademark petrol, a bit of mixed tropical fruit, some bluestone, and a rich dose of kerosene on the spin. There are faint hints of berry and pink peppercorn lingering softly throughout, and I find this nose ... Read More

  • St. Urbans-Hof Riesling Kabinett Ockfener Bockstein 2009

    Snoothrank:

The WS review says it well: a real mouthful of peach, apricot, and lime, and an intriguing creamy texture on the tongue. More than off-dry, this vintage is halfway to sweet, even though it's been taken to 8% alcohol (per the label). I'm enjoying it all by itself, but it should go really well with mild-to-sharp cheeses, and spectacularly well w... Read More
