Spottswoode is a family-owned historic vineyard and winery renowned for its exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon. Established in 1882 by George Schonewald, the estate is distinguished by the historic Victorian home depicted on the Spottswoode label. Spottswoode was christened by Mrs. Albert Spotts, who owned the property from 1910 until its purchase in 1972 by Mary Weber Novak and her late husband, Dr. Jack Novak. The first Spottswoode Cabernet Sauvignon was produced in 1982, exactly one hundred years after the estate’s founding. Today, two of Mary’s daughters, Beth and Lindy, work for the family winery that each year releases four very special wines: the Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Spottswoode Sauvignon Blanc, Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon and the recently-introduced Field Book Rhone. The Novak family is committed to producing wines that faithfully reflect their grape origins. Each Spottswoode wine is known for its refined elegance, balance, and classic structure. • Howdy, folks.  I have access to very well preserved mid-90s Mondavi reserve cabs. I have been eyeing them for a while and wondered if anyone here has opened them recently and cared to share their thoughts on whether they are worth the $100 or so it would cost to acquire them. Thanks in advance. • Spottswoode. It’s a name, particularly when paired with Cabernet Sauvignon, that tends to elicit a uniformly impressed reaction from wine lovers across a broad spectrum of palate preferences. "Why is that?" one is tempted to ask. Are the wines simply that appealing? Is there something inherently there that makes these true Napa classics? Or is t... Read More

  • So here's a little project I've been kicking around to no end.The idea is simple, what are the top 10 wines in any region that remain affordable and really deliver exceptional experiences?I know there are so many varaibles here but a list of 10 is large enough to account for the variables. So let me start by defining affordable. I would say, in t... Read More

  • Lyndenhurst Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

    Snoothrank:

given my limited knowledge of wine (we moved to the bay area 2 1/2 years ago) the 2005 spottswoode estate cab is the best i have had. granted it is expensive, but this satiates the most important things i look for in a wine: big, creamy, fruity but with a soft finish. i tried a 2007 which was good but still a little too young. the 2005 was perfe... • My father started the tradition when my nieces and nephew were born.  He did it for my daughter too with a 1981 Cabernet. Now she is having a child and I'd like to continue the tradition.  I know it's still early for 2010 wines, but I thought I'd get this started. Any recommendations for a 2010 red wine that should age WELL for the next 21 years?... • Spottswoode Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 1991

    Snoothrank:

Deep and spicy on the nose with hints of allspice, white pepper, vitamins, vanilla, toast and old chicken bouillon cube all blending for an intriguing, if not totally appealing bouquet. Up front this offer a nice bit of sweet, bright red fruit but the mid-palate becomes dominated by the acidity as it turns harsh and hollow which becomes unrelen... Read More
