The Sonoma region has a rich heritage filled with historic California character that dates back to the early 1800’s. It began when Russian colonists planted grapes along the Sonoma coastline. The credit, however, really goes to the Spanish Franciscan fathers, who in 1823, planted several thousand grape vines at their northernmost California mission, San Francisco Solano. This is located right off the world-famous town square in the city of Sonoma. Padre José Altimera claimed that the Sonoma Valley was the best site he had ever found for a new mission because it had everything he was looking for – fertile land, mineral springs, waterways, abundant game, and a mild climate. For the same reasons, today Sonoma is still cherished by many. By the mid-1800’s, several cuttings from the Sonoma Mission vineyards were taken to start new vineyards throughout Northern California.
