Description 1 of 1
The idea to produce a wine together came 2004 when Gerhard Kracher and Aldo Sohm had lunch together in New York. It should be a Grüner Veltliner. The two began to define their very own style of Grüner Veltliner.
Aldo Sohm (Best Sommelier of the World 2008 and Chef Sommelier at Le Bernardin) and Gerhard Kracher bring their passion for wine and food to a boutique production of Gruner Veltliner from the Wienviertel region of Austria. 2009 they have began to produce their first Grüner Veltliner. Today they produce a Sine Vineyard and a Old Vineyard Gründer Veltliner.
Weinviertel is a region rich in old vine vineyards, great soils and micro-climates. Sohm & Kracher eventually focused on two small vineyards. Gaisbuckel vines were planted on pure limestone rocks wtih a gravelly topsoil. The second vineyard is home to 35 year old vines with a similar soil structure and slightly more sandy component.
Alois Kracher’s passion for his vines was irrepressible, learned from his father and passed on with fervor to his son Gerhard. Unsuspecting guests of their winery are often hijacked to the vineyards for vine by vine tours, during which they animatedly point out subtle graduations in the terrain which make all the difference between Kracher vineyards and those of his neighbors.
Small, undulating crests in the topography give a great advantage to the vines in this sandy, often water-soaked terrain. The vitality of Kracher’s vines is obvious; the leaves are richly colored and the stalks thick and strong, resulting in fruit offering complex layers of flavor. The estate today is comprised of about 26 hectares (about 65 acres) tended by Alois Kracher, Sr. and planted with traditional Austrian varieties. Alois Kracher, in his tragically brief lifetime, achieved recognition as one of the greatest dessert wine makers in the world, and his son Gerhard continues to hold high the standard of the winery.– Description from kornfeil
