With its current strategic vision SOGRAPE is overseeing a “homecoming”, a return to the characteristics of the company that Fernando van Zeller Guedes conceived and built. All this is being done paying attention to differences in production volumes, market position and the adjustment to new environments. Far from being smaller, responsibilities are even greater for the new generation, in which Salvador da Cunha Guedes and his brothers Manuel Pedro and Fernando have important roles. To unite the company’s tradition and identity with the new challenges of modernity and globalisation is no easy task. It is a project that the new generation has proved it can pursue successfully, as was the case with the previous generations. And it was under the aegis of the new generation that in 2002 SOGRAPE acquired the SANDEMAN brand (Port, Sherry and Brandy), with which it definitely consolidates its presence in the Port business and its international strategy. At the same time SOGRAPE signed an agreement/partnership Read more »

  • For some time now, I have noticed a pattern with men who disparage rose as being a "girly" wine. Some of the most accomplished and masculine sommeliers I know would rather drink rose than pretty much anything else. Any thoughts on the male problem with drinking rose? Read More

  • Mateus Rose 2001

    Snoothrank:

The nose features strawberries but also has something else I can't quite place. This wine literally tastes, though, like nothing. It's neither sweet nor dry, not acidic or creamy, and has no quantifiable taste whatsoever. Read More

    Snoothrank:

But I like the rather subtle and soft acidity - most cheap rosés have that unholy and pungent acidity, and I'm glad this doesn't. Goes well with mediterranean dishes ... Read More

    Snoothrank:

I like Mateus's shapely bottles and attractive little labels. Rock bottom price. Things did not get off to a good start when the cheap cork crumbled the minute I put an opener into it - maybe that helps explain the price tag. The flavor was not bad - tart and fruity, with hints of oak and pineapple. It was a little watery, but overall a perf... Read More

  • Mateus Rosé Premier NV

    Snoothrank:

One of my favorite roses. Light, fruity, with a distinct strawberry aftertaste. Slightly bubbly... if you buy this wine, it will give it back in spades. Absolutely lovely wine for a summer evening, picnic, or girls night out :) Read More
