Sloan Estate is a cult winery founded by Seattle entrepreneur Stuart Sloan, an avid collector of Bordeaux and California wines who decided to produce his own label based out of Napa, California in the 1990s. Superstar winemaker Mark Aubert oversaw the first wines, and these early releases garnered raves, sending prices into the stratosphere and creating a very long waiting list for the mere 600 cases produced. Martha McClellan has been at the helm for the past several years. The 12-acre estate produces blends from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot. Later vintages have been known to sell at prices starting around $600 a bottle, with much more fetched at auction. In 2011, Sloan sold the business to Asian investors, but McClellan has stated that operations will continue as before.

  • Okay, so are tannins sour or bitter?  I was in a pub at Sloan Square in London in '78 where I was served a "bitter" beer, and let me tell you, bitter was the right word for it!  I didn't want to insult anyone so I took it with me into the latrine and poured it down the drain.  I'm quite certain the bitter taste in a wine is not anywhere as sever... • Okay, I have no idea how to do this.  I posted what I thought was an intro a week or two ago and I cannot find either my post or any of whatever replies there might have been.  Computers and the arcane rituals one has to perform in order to make sense of any of this crap are an absolute mystery to me.  I am a MENSA member so I know perfectly wel... • It's interesting that a few new topics have popped up recently (Experiencing Cabernet Franc for one) and that my wife Sandra just today handed me an article by Dave McIntyre she cut out of a Washington Post newspaper dated 25 March 2015.  I'm starting this new topic based on this article "The wine cost four digits.  And the taste?" regarding the... • I blanched two bunches of asparagus for a dinner several nights ago, and discovered the remnants last night going limp in the refrigerator.  There was no time to waste; these spears or what remained of them were no more than a day from compost fodder but I couldn't think of much tasty to do with them except to incorporate them into a sauce that ... Got a sweet room at a place in St. Helena and I'm looking for recommendations of what the best places are to taste. I plan on spending at least two days in the Valley tasting, with a day trip out to Santa Cruz mountain... Read More
