Sine Qua Non is the California cult wine created by Austrian winemaker Manfred Krankl and wife Elaine. These highly in-demand wines, which consistently received near perfect scores from critic Robert Parker, can fetch upwards of $500 a bottle and can only be had through their über exclusive mailing list or via auction. The wines are Rhone style blends in red and white, kept to a small production of 3,500 cases a year. The name is Latin for “without which not” or more fittingly to fans, “something that cannot be done without.” The “winery” (not open to the public) is a warehouse in Ventura, California, originally founded during Krankl’s stint as owner of restaurant Campanile, for which the first wines were produced in 1994. The first wines were produced from fruit sourced in various locations in California and other including Oregon, but he now grows most of his own grapes in small vineyards in Ojai Valley and Sta Rita Hills.

  • That Caymus 40th sure is stirring up conversation on the wine boards. I hear ... I hear ... Similar to the Sine Qua Non Grenache I had the other night. Hut hey, if the critics like it then it will sell and the general public will fall in line. &nbs Read More

  • The other day while rating a Jettlynn Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon a thought entered my head. With Snooth's system of 1 to 5 we know pretty much of how we are going to rate our tasted wines. My favorite wine is a Malbec which I reserve the number 4 in the rating system. This Jettlynn 07 Cabernet was also a 4 in my mind. This is where my questi... Read More

  • Sine Qua Non Mr. K the Noble Man 2005

    Snoothrank:

100% Chardonnay with fruit from the Alban vineyard, this is a fully botrytised sweet wine that sits plumply at 235 grs/L. The 2005 is a regal wine that is one of the great dessert wines of the world. Sadly, the esteemed Alois Kracher whose Kracher wines I place on a padestal is no longer with us. An amazing deep golden colour with fragrances of ... Read More

  • Sine Qua Non Body and Soul Roussanne Viognier Other Calif/White 2007

    Snoothrank:

A limited 475-case wine that is 71% Roussanne and 29% Viognier, with fruit from the Eleven Confessions vineyard and matured in one-third new French oak. A vibrant color of golden sunflower oil with a copper rust tinge. The first thing that hit me warm pancakes with maple syrup! Youthul, uplifting aromas of honeysuckle, bees wax, preserved lemon... • Sine Qua Non Syrah California On Your Toes 2001

    Snoothrank:

Aged for 39 months in new oak, A medium+ black ruby core, this prodigious wine exudes enticing aromas of Morello cherry, blueberry compote, damp smoky wood chips and a hint of finger-crushed blackberry flesh. Dry and full-bodied, this is perfectly in balance right now, having descended onto a plateau of balance between the holy trinity acid, ta... Read More

  • Sine Qua Non Syrah California Atlantis Fe2o3 1a B & C 2005

    Snoothrank:

Hits some high, floral notes off the nose. Dominating palate, with a lush, silky mouthfeel, explosive red and dark fruits, but then finishing seemlessly, with precision and maybe even a bit of magic this wine has big and flavorful fruit combined with elegance and balance. Read More
