A lot of what we do at Simi is based on tradition, enhanced with cutting-edge innovation. Our philosophy has always been to maintain the quality and style that we're recognized for, while at the same time improve our methods for growing grapes and crafting wines to reflect the experience and knowledge we are accumulating and have been throughout the winery's 125-year history. Long ago we also realized the importance of Alexander Valley and knew that it would be a leading appellation for growing Bordeaux varietals. Today we showcase the region with our Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as well as our vineyard-designated Landslide Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1989 we purchased our Russian River Valley Goldfields Vineyard and planted it to hand-selected original cuttings from some of the best and oldest vineyards in California. This innovative technique gives us the amazing diversity of flavors that has made Simi's Russian River Reserve Chardonnay famous. Simi's unique vineyards are the genesis of Read more »

  • In this case, a '79 Mondavi Chardonnay Reserve stole the show. Just the fact that it was still upright, despite passive cellaring (another from a previously discussed estate sale my neighbor scored on) was enough to write about. However, this surprisingly gave some real, almost sublime pleasure, despite being on the precipice of oxidation. It dr... Read More

  • Rombauer is great.  Ramey is also buttery.  Rusack.  Duckhorn (not Decoy)  Toasted Head and KJ are cheap impersonations.  Don't bother unless you are on a budget.  Budget wise, I prefer Cappola (orange label), Simi, Fess Parker or Bridlewood. Hope this helps.  There is such a large market out there for buttery wines, why no winery is really in t... • Simi Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley 1997

Very much an earthy and oaky nose. On the tongue, it takes a half-second to really taste anything. This wine is, pretty much, bereft of fruit, and I am very OK with that. After those 500 milliseconds pass you realize that this wine has an incredibly soft texture. Then you get the slightest hint of currant but more woody flavors and more earthy... Read More

  • Just went and checked that Wine Berserker thread again, and it looks to be picking up a head of steam. Got a pointer there to a Wine Spectator article that I hadn't seen, which spotlights a recent UC Davis report on brettanomyces in wine. The article's a good one, not too long, and bears reading. Some highlights: 'Mousey. Wet Dog. Burnt plastic.... Read More

  • I know of a number of people in the craft beer world who are purposely introducing brettanomyces into the brewing equation to see how interesting things can get. 'Wild yeast' beers are barely (not) controllable but they are rapidly becoming cult items. Case in point, this quote about a Sierra Nevada brew, taken from Good Morning America: Sierra ... Read More

  • Testimonial: I bought a '95 Cab in a grocery store in St. Thomas in U.S. Virgin Islands in 2006, brought it home and stored until Aug. 15,2010. The cork was saturated to the top and disinagrated when opened, tryed the wine anyway and no surprise it was drinkable. That is some kind of good wine making!! or luck. Thank you for your world class win...
