In the Heart of El Dorado’s Fair Play Region nestled in the Sierra Foothills is the Shadow Ranch. Founded in 2006 by Sam & Kimari Patterson after nearly a decade of searching California’s premium grape growing areas for the ideal place to produce premium wines. Shadow Ranch emerged as a dream to create unique wine; distinctive in flavor and quality, that define excellence. Our exceptional portfolio of wines, is consistently characterized by our commitment to individualistic style and an uncommon quality. Upon his arrival in 2001 to the Sierra Foothills Sam began searching for an appropriate site to grow wine grapes and quickly recognized that the best wines in the Sierra Foothills were made from grapes grown in Fair Play. With the purchase of the 80 estate complete, we began planting our vineyards and converting the old farm house and barns into our winery and tasting room. Today we have a fully contemporary winery dedicated to making world-class wine. With a total production of a 1500 cases Read more »

  • Recently I was pleasantly surprised by a visit to Lodi, California. Long the source of well-priced, consumer friendly wines, not to mention the boost they give many of our favorite national brands, Lodi continues to work mostly off the center stage of wine in the USA. There are many reasons for this of course, from consumer preferences to the gr... Read More

From attending the ZAP Festival in January right up to my recent efforts to pair grilling recipes with Zins, they’ve been a major focus of my recent efforts. 88 points. The aroma is loaded with cranberry preserves and ripe raspberry. There are a ton of floral tones that remind me of lilac and violet, and it comes across as very highly perfumed. There is also something in there that makes me think of Mexican hot chocolate (spicy, frothy, and full of cacao.)The palate is just as perfumed and concentrate... Read More

  • I know we are all in full gift mode right now, so it’s time to take a look at some of the top wine buys in the marketplace. You can always scramble after the “Best vintage anywhere, ever!” but the truth is that much of the hoopla that surrounds the “best” vintages is based on the potential of the vintage.  I don’t know about your friends and fam...
