Schramsberg was originally established by Jacob Schram in 1862. The hillside vineyards reminded him of those used to grow Riesling in his native Germany, and he bought the land and began his wine-making business (he had been a barber by trade). Eventually the family sold the property, and nothing much of note really happened to it until Jack and Jamie Davies bought the land in 1965. The Davies' were specifically interested in making sparkling wines, but only discovered after moving onto the land that the hot Calistoga hillsides (Calistoga is typically 5 to 15 degrees warmer than the rest of the Napa Valley) were not particularly hospitable to the two grapes essential to champagne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They set about finding suppliers in other parts of the valley, and produced their first sparkling vintage in 1965. Widespread fame came in 1972, when President Nixon used the 1969 in his toast to China. Schramsberg has been the official sparkling wine of U.S. presidents ever since.

  • I was wondering what sort of new topic I could start that would pair nicely with my previous posting 'Weekday Wines'; well here it is - Weekend Wines.  Sometimes I just have to stop and take a minute to pat myself on the back for my quick wit but alas, this isn't one of those times.  Anyway, why not talk about wines we enjoy on weekends?  These ... • Schramsberg J. Schram Napa Valley 2005

    Snoothrank:

Intensely aromatic with lovely notes of green nuts, honeycomb, wild flowers, fennel pollen, green anise seed, brie rind and jammy green plum with a hint of gooseberry. Large scaled with a super fine mousse, this is creamy and broad with complex leesy flavors of smoke, nuts, caramel and even a hint of vanilla under rich citrus, quince, green plum... Read More

  • Schramsberg Brut Blanc de Noirs North Coast 2009

    Snoothrank:

Simple but precise nose of lime, yeast and white mushroom. A fine mousse greets the palate delivering a lovely version of the nose, rich with sweet lime juice, gentle yeasty notes that hint at white mushroom and some subtle pale honey notes. Theres a nice hint of minerality on the back end that drive the moderately long finish. This is really lo... Read More

  • Schramsberg Blanc de Blancs Brut 375 2008

    Snoothrank:

Pours a bright and effervescent golden color with amble carbonation. Light on the nose with some green apples and lemons. The scents do not intesify much even as this warms a tad. Starts off with a nice tingly sensation of green apples and citrus. This stays constant throughout the entire tasting. On the very back end, there is some underly... Read More
