The School House Vineyard is nestled among the cool, lush forested slopes of Spring Mountain above St. Helena, where Langtry and Spring Mountain Roads intersect, at an elevation of approximately 1500 feet. The vineyard takes its name from the 1890s one-room school house which graced the property until it was consumed by fire in the mid 1980s. The School House has lent its name to this fascinating and unique vineyard property which has quietly produced very small quantities of some of the most sought after Napa Valley wines since the mid-1950s. Steeped in Napa Valley history, School House is the ultimate cult wine producer, cult before cult was cool! – Description from dvoristanac

  • On Tuesday I wrote with great pleasure about a group of Cabernets that were right about $25 a bottle, some less. They represented much of what I look for in Cabernet, and at an affordable price. Today I turn my sights to wines that promise much more. At least they are priced in such a way as to promise much more, not that they always deliver.  T... Read More

  • Not only is Cabernet Sauvignon the most popular red wine, it’s also one that is best suited to gift giving. It’s a wine that everyone knows and understands. Big, rich and bold, it’s the archetype of red wines that is perfect for the cooler months that lie ahead. While Cabernet does get a bit of a bad rap as being ubiquitous, that doesn’t mean th... • It's not often that I have a plan. Well, a detailed plan at least.. Some sort of a plan not being a requirement for those in this business. But a detailed plan, and over-arching theme for a visit to wine country can certainly come in handy.  This month’s, or rather last month’s theme was, surprisingly enough: Zinfandel. I say surprisingly becaus... Read More

  • I'm picking up here where I last left off, halfway through reporting on mostly the 2009 vintage in Barolo. As you can see here, and in my previous report on these wines, the vintage is a bit irregular to say the least with some powerful, structured wines being produced as well as many wines that show elevated alcohols or aggressive tannins. As I... Read More

  • I wrote yesterday about the 2009 vintage in Barolo and today I begin reporting on the wines tasted. with over 30 winery visits o the region last month there's a lot of wine to report on. I've included my notes below, broken down by visit in roughly chronological order. As you can see not everyone was able to present the 2009 Barolo for each of t... Read More
