The Schiavenza company acts in the territory of Serralunga d'Alba since 1956. The firm started by the brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria is now managed by the son-in-law Luciano Pira, agronomist and celiar man, aided by the wife Maura and by the brother-in-law Walter. In the past the farm and the surrounding lands were owned by the Opera Pia Barolo; the work was made by sharecroppers called "schiavenza": from which derives the curious company's name. Actually the company extend itself on eight hectares of vineyards in the territory of Serralunga d'Alba; it owns moreover 15.240 m2 in the village of Monforte d'Alba in the Perno hamlet. From these esteemed lands the company produces red wine of excelent quality following an artisan making. – Description from Alejandro

  • I have a good memory and as with most people it is particularly astute when ... Chiarlo Cannubi - Barolo24 - Schiavenza Broglio - Serralunga25 - Mascarello Monprivato - Castiglione So the modernists do seem to have created a new breed of Barolo, one that is more approachable at age 12 than the traditionally made wines. And they are good wines,... Read More

  • Schiavenza Barolo Broglio Riserva 2001

    Snoothrank:

A touch floral on the nose with some rd fruit and celery seed notes but this is fairly oxidized. Smooth and polished in the mouth, this is showing noticeable oxidation over fruit that is a bit matte and details. 70pts Read More

  • I'm thinking about taking a short trip to Piemonte, mainly to try the highly-reputed wines of the region.  I'm not interested, though, in setting up visits to wineries. What I am thinking of doing is going to Slow Food recommended restaurants in Piemonte, and asking the owners or staff to help me select a wonderful wine from the region   and the... Read More

  • Schiavenza Dolcetto d'Alba 2010

    Snoothrank:

Pretty intense on the nose with plenty of tarry, mineral earth notes all layered over nicely spicy black plum and black berry fruit. Air brings out hints of bit of graphite and violets. Soft on entry, there is plenty of attractive fruit here, in fact this is quite fruity but at the same time nicely tense with fine powdery tannins, and nice cut ... Read More

  • Schiavenza Barolo Prapò 2008

    Snoothrank:

Prune and plum dominate the nose with soft spice notes that show light mint and a little cinnamon extract on the nose, along with hints of camphor and fruitcake. Very soft and expansive on entry with a rich, medium-bodied feel. This is perhaps a touch monotone with soft tannins, though it is snappy and spicy on the finish with a cinnamon pepperi... Read More

  • Schiavenza Barolo Broglio Riserva 2008

    Snoothrank:

Perfumed on the nose with aromas of wild herbs, earth, a hint of sharp mint and lightly burnished ripe fruits. This is focused and high-toned in the mouth with light, sweet wild raspberry and lingonberry fruit on the palate. This has very pure fruit and real clarity and tension on the palate, gaining a dark wild cherry note, bit of heat, a littl... Read More
