Since our small winery’s first vintage in 1991, our goal has been to create handcrafted, full-flavored wines that express the personality of the unique Sonoma County vineyards where they are grown. Fred first became known for Zinfandel from his father’s Alexander Valley vineyard, and now his careful hand with Pinot Noir from the Russian River and Sonoma County has quietly gained attention and a steady following. That same attention has made Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah that exemplify the bounty of Sonoma County vineyards. – Description from Dragac

Scherrer Winery on Snooth

  • November 28 update:We were back in Amador County for Thanksgiving.  (Puppy bonding took precedence over family this year, so we left the Bay Area to get away from everyone.)  While there we stayed at Rest, A Boutique Hotel. Rest is owned by Tracey and Mark Berkner, who met while working for Marriott.  He's a chef, but moved to the operational si... Read More

  • Scherrer Russian River Valley 'Sasha' Syrah 2009

    Snoothrank:

Another fantastic bottle of Scherrer Syrah! Interesting note of cocoa on the nose. The palate is layered full of ripe macerated black cherry, rhubarb, a hint of brown necco wafer, but without the black pepper bite that syrah can have. This is a very well balanced wine with medium plus acidity and a fairly long finish. Read More

  • We visited Scherrer two years ago during their open house and while it was a pleasure meeting the Fred and his family the wines were just OK for us. I really wanted to like them.... I may have to re-visit! EM-I've been thinking about trying a Keenan bottle for some time. That CF sounds like our kind of wine-BIG! RBA-Lovely spread! You have also ... Read More

  • Hard to say what it exactly is, but we've all had moments when wines were really open and "singing" maybe after a quick decant, or hours of air, they just started to open and catch fire. I can think of quite a few wines that stick out in this way, though it seems like a very unpredictable phenomenon. Also, what the heck is going on with wines th... Read More

  • NG, you're right, we visited Stoller last July and thoroughly enjoyed everything we tasted. We brought back a Pinot, a Syrah and a Chard, which indicates that we were very impressed since we typically only purchase one bottle per winery visit. Keep in mind though that these are not lower priced wines, each was in the mid - $30 range.\Tonight, as... Read More

  • CY, welcome to Snooth! We are also on the East Coast but have made quite a few trips to CA wine country over the years with an emphasis on the Northern Sonoma and especially the Russian River area so I'll let the others talk to Napa (although I will 2nd the advice to search out Robin Akhurst). Here are a few of my favorites:Scherrer (need to mak... • Hi everyone.  This is my first post on the boards.  My wife and I are doing a long weekend in Healdsburg (Jan 15-17) and Yountville (Jan 17-19) over MLK weekend and were looking for some recommendations on wineries to visit.  We tend to like more full bodied red wines, but are open to other wines as well. We are from New York and want to focus o... Read More

  • I'm sure you all have them, those prized bottles that you're saving for just the right occasion. I have a shelf in my wine fridge labeled "special". Of course, special times do come around but not often enough so I decided we'd start having top shelf Saturday. Maybe once a month or even once every other month. I'm not talking about opening the m... Read More
