Saxum Vineyards is a boutique winery overseen by winemakers Heather and Justin Smith in the Temple Gap area of Paso Robles, California. The winery focuses on red wines using the Rhone varietal stalwarts Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre. Production is kept to the minimal output of under 3000 cases per year, with low yields divided between the Broken Stones, Heart Stone, James Berry, Booker, Rocket Block, and Bone Rock vineyards. The soils in the growing areas are mainly calcareous, providing incentive for roots to dig deep for natural moisture, with elevated locations that ensure balanced grape ripeness. The wines are handmade, organic, and sustainable, free of added chemicals or vineyard pesticides.

Saxum Vineyards on Snooth

  • I will be in Paso Robles during the festival this weekend, and came to snooth to look up travel tips that have been posted in the past.  But things have also been changing fast and furious there, places closing up and many others opening.  I thought it might be more efficient to start afresh.  Anyone have any places they think I shouldn't miss, ... • Sean Sullivan recently published and updated a list of his top 100 or so wines of 2012, with predictable results. Cayuse, Quilceda Creek, Leonetti all occupy the top 3 spots, followed by a few mid tier standards like Betz, Reynvaan, Maison Bleue, Grammercy. Well, I should say I'm just starting to get to know these names and also starting to buy ... • I get so caught up in work that I often neglect to check in here. I'm apologizing about that!  I'm back afer a few weeks in New Zealand, which sucks up all my time not only during the trip but for the weeks prior and, as it looks, most of the week after my return. Before you ask, new Zealand was great. • Paso Robles Trip Notes: West of PasoThis was a trip my wife and I had planned with another couple months in advance. None of us had spent any time in Paso before, and the anticipation was very high indeed.
