Bodegas Santo Tomas might very well be the oldest winery in Mexico, established in 1888 in Ensenada, in the Valle de Guadelupe in Baja. It is named for the Mission de Santo Tomas Aquino established by José Loriente in 1791. Sacramental wines were produced here exclusively until 1888, when Francisco Andonegul and Miguel Ormart transformed it into a commercial winery. It went more industrial and moved to Miramar Street in 1932 when Abelardo Rodriguez took it over. Today, it is managed by Santiago Cosio, who strives to produce high quality wines with a sense of tradition, using modern techniques and equipment. The region is known for its excellent growing conditions, producing balanced fruit and well-structured wines.

  • Buehler is a pretty good deal.  Recently had a bunch of it for around $15 ... ... and it was from Bodegas Santo Tomas in Ensenada.  It had the three most common Bordeaux varieties, but it listed Barbera as the first grape.  It was really fresh and tasty, with a little more heft than the usual Barbera.  Not a fruit bomb, a very moderate ABV, b... Two or three times a year my brother-in-law stops off at the Valle de Guadalupe ... fishing trips down around Santo Tomas. He gives me these wines and I enjoy tracking the progress of the wine industry, down there. This one seems like a step back from older vintages that I have had from this maker. First of all, the wine is drinkable. Howev... Read More
