Santa Barbara had the good fortune of being the site of one of the numerous California Missions built by the Franciscan Brothers in the late 18th century. In the late 19th century Santa Barbara became an important producer for the San Francisco Market. Santa Cruz Island, 20 miles off the coast at Santa Barbara, was the home of one of the principal suppliers. They grew, made and shipped their wine by boat to San Francisco. This economic model was probably doomed to fail once other vineyards were established closer to the city and in the early 20th century production declined and was finally killed off Read more »

  • Brewer-Clifton is well known in Santa Barbara County and has a reputation as being one of the best houses in our area.  This Pinot Noir from the Santa Rita Hills is the first BC wine I have tried and now I'm kicking myself for not trying it sooner. • Made a trip to Pahrump Nevada today to play a round of golf with my friends at Mountain Falls GC. Amazing course! Rated #1 in Nevada and the #7 public course in America. • Not exactly sure what the dinner plan is for tonight, but this should work with whatever we may have: Regulars may recall that I few weeks ago I opened a bottle of the Ojai 2010 White Hawk Vineyard Syrah and complained about the acid hit.  I'm pretty sure the problem I had with that wine was residue from an earlier meal.  (Happily, I have anothe... • I once spent 48 hours making a sauce from scratch. It was a classic Sauce Robert that started with a tray full of bones and vegetables. The compound sauce required demi-glace, the rich reduction of beefy goodness that takes a lot of time and effort, and I was determined to use no pre-made ingredients. At the end, gallons of liquid and pounds of ... Read More

  • I go to S. Calif every winter to visit family and drive up to Santa Barbara for a day to visit vineyards. We've now been to quite a few vineyards and among our favorites are Zaca Mesa, Koehler and Bridlewood.  But the stand-out vineyard was Demetria. You need a reservation to visit, but it's worth it. It's at the end of a long winding private ro... Read More

  • Byron Pinot Noir Santa Barbara County 2013

    Snoothrank:

Fearless red berry and cherry aromas with heat and spice in equal measure. Good floral aromas, mountain herbs and a touch of violet. In the mouth, it's quite fruit forward, full of red fruit, mostly cherry but with some strawberry, cranberry and even watermelon though that's much lighter. Fresh acidity and good structure support the fruit flavor... Read More
