Santa Barbara had the good fortune of being the site of one of the numerous California Missions built by the Franciscan Brothers in the late 18th century. The good brothers needed altar wine and a source of reliable drink. Wells and stored water had a habit of becoming contaminated. Whether by choice or necessity they used a variety, now known as Mission, a variety of uncertain origin, but hardy and productive. It produced a very rough wine, suitable for the altar, but it must have made the more worldly members of the Order long for the wines of Europe. In the late 19th century Santa Barbara became an important producer for the San Francisco Market. Santa Cruz Island, 20 miles off the coast at Santa Barbara, was the home of one of the principal suppliers. They grew, made and shipped their wine by boat to San Francisco. This economic model was probably doomed to fail once other vineyards were established closer to the city and in the early 20th century production declined and was finally killed off Read more »

  • I really need to go to OT's non-wine related project page and post about the party.  Or maybe I should just do that here? Anyway, bought some 2010 Petrolo Il Torrione (4 bottles), a "Super Tuscan" whose big brother goes for more than I like to pay for wine; the Torrione gets similar scores and usually sells for $25-35, but JJBuckley had it for $... • V V, I would say that Ojai is a good (not a short) hour's drive from SB airport.  Ojai has excellent restaurants and one aclaimed winery.  There are several other wineries in the area but I have no first hand (or second hand or third hand) knowledge of them.If you are staying in SB, and want to drive over to Ojai to spend the day, that makes mor... • v v, the Golden State looks forward to hosting you, again.I assume you know that lodging in the city of Santa Barbara does not exactly put you in the middle of wine country.  With a quick Google search, though, I was surprised at how many wineries do have.  My first choices for in-town visits would be Au Bon Climat, Jaffurs and Vogelzang.Santa Y... • Lido Bay's Seven Seas Chardonnay 2011

2011 vintage. Interesting Santa Barbara chard from Lido Bay Winery. This pours out a rich gold color and has lots of apricot and honey on the nose. On the palate there's more grilled apricot, honey, a touch of oak, and a bit of lemon zest on the back end. This has a bit of thickness in the mouth with medium acidity and a medium finish. • Santa Barbara Winery Pinot Noir 2013

Bright cherry aromas with pleasant minerality and some salinity on the nose showing some chalkiness and vanilla notes as well and cinnamon spice rounding the edges. Full and rich in the mouth, with cool strawberry and cherry fruit mingling with streaks of cocoa and raspberry jam and pockets of acidity finding their way through and lifting the pa... Read More

  • The oil spill is, I'm guessing, about 20 miles north of downtown Santa Barbara and about 20-25 miles south and west of what most people refer to as Santa Barbara wine country--Lompoc/Santa Ynez.  There are some tasting rooms in the city of Santa Barbara, and, in fact most of them are within walking distance of each other.  I would guess that the... • I'm finally getting around to this.  Last week we spent a few days in the Central Coast.  I wanted to do a little wine tasting, and we headed over to Edna Valley.  For some reason Edna Valley seems to be the least appreciated AVA in the Central Coast region. I really don't get it.  There are several wineries there that offer terrific products at... Read More

Let your mouth tell you as your brain convinces you to push past cases of luscious and full-bodied red wines that are aching for you.
