Santa Barbara had the good fortune of being the site of one of the numerous California Missions built by the Franciscan Brothers in the late 18th century. The good brothers needed altar wine and a source of reliable drink. Wells and stored water had a habit of becoming contaminated. Whether by choice or necessity they used a variety, now known as Mission, a variety of uncertain origin, but hardy and productive. It produced a very rough wine, suitable for the altar, but it must have made the more worldly members of the Order long for the wines of Europe. In the late 19th century Santa Barbara became an important producer for the San Francisco Market. Santa Cruz Island, 20 miles off the coast at Santa Barbara, was the home of one of the principal suppliers. They grew, made and shipped their wine by boat to San Francisco. This economic model was probably doomed to fail once other vineyards were established closer to the city and in the early 20th century production declined and was finally killed off Read more »

  • When he started Kendall-Jackson Winery thirty-two years ago, Jess Jackson's vision was that everyone should have access to a luxury bottle of wine, wherever or whoever they are. The goal was to make premium wines at accessible prices. Judging by the scope and scale of Kendall-Jackson today, we can all agree he made good on his vision. Kendall-Ja... Read More

  • Though I've mentioned Jonata on and off several times this decade, don't think I've ever seen a single other person post about it in the Forum. Would be curious how others here react to any in their range, and this one in particular. I haven't had it yet, but view it as worthy of purchase.  One of the most fascinatingly complex and powerful wine... Read More

  • Emark, that looks like the same bottle we brought back from our December trip to Santa Barbara. We were very impressed with the whole Jaffurs lineup and the folks in the winery were really nice, like they really enjoyed what they were doing. • Last night we drank a Lafond Syrah SRH from (duh!) the Santa Rita HIlls.  A colleague brought it  back from Santa Barbara, where the winery has a tasting room; she does that for me whenever she's down there because she's a great colleague and knows I like the wine.  She also got two bottles of Oregon PN in appreciation. This is a seriously good ... • Melville Syrah Estate Verna's Santa Barbara County 2013

    Snoothrank:

More purple than red color. Something of a musty, fungal nose. On the tongue this wine seems viscous. Red berry fruit and blueberryOK, not red--on entry. It is close to being annoyingly sweet, but, somehow, it backs away. Earthy mid-palate. Another pretty-easy-to-drink-but-not-terribly-sophisticated wine. Read More

  • No. Especially when most wineries are charging ridiculous fees for tastings that not so long ago were free. The staff aren't bartenders and they aren't waiters. Bottom line is they are shills for the winery, trying to effect sales. How did you deal with them? Read More

  • Wednesday was a travel and cleansing day. We decided to take our time going from Santa Ynez to Santa Barbara so after dropping off a case of wine at the Wine Country Shippers we hopped on over to Highway 1. What a beautiful stretch of land! We made a number of scenic overlook stops, took in a few of the State beaches and just enjoyed the ride. W... Read More
