In the mid 1980s, the Mason family of Hawke’s Bay began to see their family estate ‘Dartmoor’ in a new light. For more than century, the land had been successfully farmed. But the time had come for a change. Pasture made way for grapevines; winery buildings replaced farm sheds; conversations about grape varieties replaced talk of livestock. Mentally prepared to ‘do things properly’ and excel at their new venture, brothers David and Mark Mason established Sacred Hill. The name is derived from Puketapu - which means ‘sacred hill’ in Maori - a small village close to the estate. David Mason took on the key role of managing director. From a first pressing that yielded just 350 cases of wine David has nurtured Sacred Hill through a phenomenal growth phase with his involvement spanning all facets of the business, with an emphasis on marketing, brand management and sales. The estate has enjoyed a rapid rise in profile with a special focus on producing Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Read more »

Sacred Hill Wines Ltd on Snooth

  • Sacred Hill Helmsman 2014

    Snoothrank:

Excellent, inviting garnet colour. Scent redolent of cedar bark and cassis or perhaps crushed Himalayan Blackberry. Entry is pleasant, smooth but slightly tannic - with a fairly prominent oak-vanilla on the finish. This finish has a smoky quality reminiscent of a hickory fire, though in a reasonably balanced way. Very Californian in style - assu... Read More

  • Sacred Hill Hawkes Bay Syrah 2010

    Snoothrank:

Ripe, low and quite minty, this is herbal on the nose with white and black pepper, a little beef and a stony edge. It is broad though dry in the mouth with weighty extract of black cherry pit fruit. This lacks a touch of vibrancy, but does have lovely flavor. Its dry and firm with savory beefy notes, mineral edges and cool blueberry than turns a... Read More

  • Sacred Hill Syrah Hawkes Bay Deer Stalkers 2007

    Snoothrank:

Just tried the 2008 release. Inky dark and bursting with class, the nose is all about dark fruit, with wafts of savoury oak and just a hint of pepper at the back. Pure velvet on the palate, with waves of bittersweet cherry, blackberry and chocolate elements. The finish is worth the wait, too; sex in a bottle. Read More
