Founded in 1972, Rutherford Hill Winery is a pioneer in the development of California Merlot. The grape growers who founded Rutherford Hill carefully studied the geography of the region and capitalized on climate and soil conditions that resembled those of Pomerol, the small but distinctive Merlot-growing region of Bordeaux. And what a promising discovery that was - one that has borne plenty of fruit - specifically, the lush, purple-black grapes that have contributed so much to Rutherford Hill's success. Today, Merlot remains the flagship wine of the company with 75 percent of Rutherford Hill's production dedicated to this varietal, one of the leading Merlots of Napa Valley. When the Terlato family of the Terlato Wine Group (TWG), Lake Bluff, Illinois, purchased the winery in 1996, they immediately began to apply their guiding principle: Quality is a way of life. The pursuit of excellence began with a comprehensive review of all aspects of the facility that resulted in significant enhancements. TWG Chairman Read more »

  • Hi, I am an accidental wine enthusiast. As part of a major remodeling project including our family room I revived my interest and enjoyment of wine. Our family room was redone using dark hickory planking and the room has a short wall next to our fireplace. This wall has always presented a challenge to make use of the space. I researched and sear... Read More

  • Rutherford Hill Napa Cabernet Sauvignon 2007

    Snoothrank:

Wow, I was very disappointed with this vintage. It's very flat, not much pizazz and certainly not indicative of previous vintages. I cracked a bottle from multiple cases to verify my disappointment with the 2007. The fruit is muted and dominant dustiness prevails... When I read the initial review that encouraged drinking this wine immediately th... Read More

  • We're heading back to (my favorite wine region) Russian River the first weekend in October and are looking for advice on what to do and what to expect.  We've been to RRV several times but only during the off season.  Is there anything special we should do at this time of year, and conversely, is there anything we should avoid? Nice easy drinking Cabernet. Not too much flash or structure. Just a decent Cabernet to grill with outside. Sometimes, that's all you need. Cheers! Read More

  • While perusing wines at a quaint boutique in Nova Scotia during a writing respite today, an interesting thought occurred to me. Unless I've overlooked it, there has not been a vibrant thread regarding odd wine labels on this platform heretofore.
