The history of grape growing in our region begins with the early Russian settlers who were the first emigrants to settle the area and plant vines. A little known fact is that these plantings, which begin in 1817, were the earliest in northern California, antedating those of Padre Jose Altimira in Sonoma Valley. The region became an official American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1983 and its boundaries underwent an expansion in 2005. The area now boasts over 15,000 acres of vineyards, 200 grape growers and 75 wineries. The wines of the Russian River Valley are increasingly recognized as among the best in the world and the appellation is often quoted as one of the top in the country. Our "cool climate viticulture" conditions are perfect for growing certain wine grapes, especially Pinot noir and Chardonnay, and recent experience has also shown that "cool climate" Syrah is a distinctive wine unmatched by its warm climate counterpart. Russian Hill Estate Winery has found its perfect home. Russian Hill Estate, a family owned and operated winery, is located in the heart of the Russian River Valley. Using the utmost care from vineyard to bottle, Russian Hill is dedicated to the production of world-class Pinot noir Read more »

  • We're doing a long weekend in Russian River and Napa this weekend. Flew into San Francisco yesterday with no problems. Friend picked us up at the airport, definitely beats the heck out of fighting the huge crowd at the rental car counters. Why don't they have a contiguous highway from the airport to hwy 101.So what's the first thing to do in win... Read More

  • Chardonnay, oh Chardonnay. You really don’t have to be any better, do you? Back in the day when I lead staff tastings in retail we had Chardonnay tastings some four times a year. It’s the only time people would call in sick in order to opt out of staff tastings. The wines, at all price points, vary so much in style and quality that you were sure... Read More

  • Thanks for updating--that happens too rarely. Goldeneye is a little more restrained than a lot of Cali PN, but it also sounds like you caught them not at their best.  I agree that they are pricey--at the uppermost end of my tolerance.  But the Gowan's Creek and the estate bottles wowed me. I like their delicacy and aromas, don't find them metall... Read More

  • Here's the report from our trip to the Russian River area and Mendocino. Our normal routine is to split one tasting and then buy one or two bottles of what tasted best.  I find that we can do an adequate job of tasting, visit a decent number of wineries and still be standing at the end of the day.  We visit places which welcome walk-ins and we al... • We're heading back to (my favorite wine region) Russian River the first weekend in October and are looking for advice on what to do and what to expect.  We've been to RRV several times but only during the off season.  Is there anything special we should do at this time of year, and conversely, is there anything we should avoid? •  We had a plan, get in early, get out early. It seems like a lot of people had the get in early plan. In years past we would show up around 11:15, park close and hit the tent before the crowd built. Well not this year. The front parking lot filled up as we approached so we parked across the road and hoofed it in. The place was a zoo from the mom... Read More
