Ruffino, produced in Tuscany, is one of the most recognizable brands of Italian wine. The first vintage of the famous Chianti was produced in 1877 by cousins Ilario and Leopoldo Ruffino. Within a few years, their wines were gaining recognition for their quality and winning awards and medals at international competitions. By the 1890s, the wine was exported internationally. In 1913, with the absence of any heirs to pass down the Ruffino estate, the retiring Ruffino cousins sold the company to the Folonari family, who elevated the brand to huge commercial success. In 1916, the Duke of Aosta named Ruffino as the official wine of the Italian royal court. The Riserva Ducale is created in 1927 to honor this event.

Fun fact: Ruffino Chianti was reputedly among the wines sold by pharmacists during the Prohibition, said to calm nerves. Just after the Prohibition, in the early 1930s, the Ruffino Orivieto Classico was first released. Into the 1940s, World War II was a mixed blessing Read more »

  • Ruffino Modus Toscana 2013

    Snoothrank:

Rich and full aromas of dark chocolate, baking spice and vanilla bean with ripe blackberry and black cherry notes that are clear and inviting. A bounce of fruit on the palate, mostly black cherry and concentrated black currant, this fills in nicely towards the mid palate, building structurally towards a tannic crescendo before a wave of acidity ... • Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale Oro Gran Selezione 2011

    Snoothrank:

Shifting aromas of earth, mushroom and fresh red fruit, red currant and strawberry with good spice and a touch of leather. Good complexity and structure here. Cherry and strawberry fruit on the palate, a touch floral and coming with cinnamon and clove on the mid palate, some more earthy notes of black olive and chocolate on the finish. Read More

The color is a bright ruby in the glass with great clarity. The nose is chock full of red fruit, raspberries, cherries and plum with a bit of a floral note over the top. The taste is wonderfully fruity, with some red berries and cherries up front that transition nicely to some hints of spice midpalate, The typically robust tannins complement ... Read More

  • Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale Oro 2010

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a lovely garnet hue in the glass with ruby along the edges, and great clarity. The nose is classic Chianti, with lovely aromas of blackberry, cherry and some floral aromas of violet and a hint of spice. The taste is quite nice, fruit forward with lots of cherry, plum and a bit of spice, maybe a bit of cumin. The flavors easily tra... Read More

  • Ruffino Classico Chianti Riserva Ducale Tan Label 2011

    Snoothrank:

The wine itself is a lovely garnet color in the glass with great clarity and a bit heavier appearance than the two previous wines we tasted. The nose has a definite fruity characteristic that borders on "jammy" with aromas of ripe berries and cherry compote along with some rustic earthy notes of oak and peat. The taste is very fruit forward, b... Read More

  • Ruffino Moscato d'Asti 2013

    Snoothrank:

Delicious! I've been trying, with little success, to find a wine or wines, that I enjoy and it's been difficult. I personally can't handle the dry burning sensation that so many of them leave when going down. This was perfect. I'll be totally honest and say I had 6 glasses. Not sure if it was the low alcohol content or what but I felt absolutely... Read More
