Round Peak Vineyards on Snooth

  • Hi, Lynn.  We were just up in your neck of the woods this past weekend in Galax and did some biking along the New River and some hiking in the mountains.  On the way home we visited Round Peak Winery, Dobbins Creek Vineyard and Laurel Grey Vineyards.  Very surprised and happy to see the quality of NC wines on the rise, especially Dobbins Creek. ... • I have a good memory and as with most people it is particularly astute when recorded painful moments in one’s life. Take for example 1994, when I finally broke into my stash of benchmark 1982 Barolo. We’re talking Marcarini, and Cascina Francia, Monprivato and Vietti. There were six bottles in all, and I carefully decanted them before cooking di... Read More

  • Nebbiolo the wine, the purest expression of the grape that shares the same name, affords wine drinkers wonderful opportunities to learn about producers as well as vintages. These wines tend to be less influenced by winemaking, and the lengthy ageing that is required for wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco, allowing one to see more of the vintage... Read More

  • I’ve already written up my thoughts on some white wines tasted while in Portugal this past summer. I wanted to get that information out in front of you while it was still most pertinent, hot, and sunny. Now as we transition to Autumn I want to give you the rundown on the red wines I enjoyed while in Portugal, wines that are well suited to the co... Read More

  • While traveling through Napa Valley last month I noticed that all the Vineyards I visited had roses planted around their crops. They're planted and watched closely for any early signs of infestation on the land. They monitor the Roses closely and upon early signs of problems, protective measures are taken to make sure the grape vines receive a s... • Last year I was lucky to have suffered from an excess of riches, but my travel schedule pushed reporting on many events to the bottom of my pile. I'm only now catching up with all of my notes, so while these notes are delayed, they certainly warrant publication. Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon is considered one of the blue chip Napa Valley ... Read More

  • I’ve had Zinfandel on my mind as of late. From attending the ZAP Festival in January right up to my recent efforts to pair grilling recipes with Zins, they’ve been a major focus of my recent efforts. While I have been celebrating the grape, there are so many great expressions available today, there is one aspect of Zinfandel that keeps it from b... Read More

  • Turnbull should be better known that it probably is. Founded in 1979 as Johnson-Turnbull, and with an excellent location smack on highway 29 just north of Oakville, the winery and home vineyards are in the heart of the Napa Valley, surrounded by such famous names as robert Mondavi, Opus One and Cakebread. Maybe folks are just so distracted by th... Read More
