Robert Stemmler is a pioneer, an early and passionate producer of outstanding California Pinot Noir. He is also a dear friend of the Racke family. And that is why our label bears his name. Robert arrived in Napa Valley in 1961 after making wine for nearly a decade in his native Germany. He worked at the prestigious Charles Krug Winery with the Mondavi brothers, then became winemaker at historic Simi in Sonoma County. He also consulted for other prominent wineries like Inglenook, St. Clement and Raymond, and in 1976, founded his own winery in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley. In 1982, having found a cool-climate Russian River Valley fruit source, he released his first Pinot Noir to great critical acclaim. Meanwhile, Marcus and Anne Moller-Racke arrived from Germany in 1981 to work at their family’s Buena Vista Winery in the Carneros region. Anne was named vineyard manager in 1983, and she learned her craft from, among others, legendary winemaker Andre Tchelistcheff. At the same time, Robert was mentoring Read more »

  • Robert Stemmler Pinot Noir Nugent Vineyard Grown Carneros 2006

    Snoothrank:

Somewhat musty nose with some vegetative hintsgreen pepper. On the palate the wine leads with the standard PN cherry. Towards mid-palate the cherry does diminish to and morphs into a slight woody bitter flavor. Some tartness also comes in to make me forget the initial cherry. Read More

  • Stemmler Pinot Noir Nugent Vineyard 2007

    Snoothrank:

Medium color--i.e., noticeable light passes through the wine in the glass. Fairly neutral nose. Big hit of fruit--cherry (what a surprise for a PN)--on the entrance to the mouth. Once I get past all that fruit it seems to be a fairly uncomplicated straightforward wine. I would like more acid and more heft. Could be a good summer wine with g... Read More

  • Well we are back from the Glen Ellen/Kenwood trip. We found a few wines we liked, and enjoyed exploring the area. Since I am a big pinot person, especially RRV or sonoma coast, I knew I wasn't necessarily in the heart of that area of Sonoma,  But since it had been so long since I visited this area, we decided to give it a go.We stopped first in ... • Robert Stemmler Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Nugent Vineyard 2009

    Snoothrank:

Fairly pleasant on the initial palate. Medium weight--actually, for a red it is fairly light. Some cherry fruit, but not overwhelming. Some bitterness on the tip of the tongue (?) and the back of the palate. An OK wine. but the quest for that ethereal Pinot that people talk about continues. US$38.99 at Total WIne. Read More

  • Hi everyone!Yes, OT, ACME is GREAT!   One of my best stops of the trip!  In addition to my Petite Abeille, I picked up a 2011 Hirsch Vineyards The Bohan-Dillon Sonoma coast Pinot noir and 2012 Azur Rose (from Fairplay of all places!!).  I don't remember the woman's name who assisted me (I am terrible with names), but she was very helpful and inf... • So I am going to Napa tomorrow for a few days.  I have some prearranged plans that cannot be changed, but have some limited  time for tasting. As "napagirl", I should already know exactly where to go.  The problem is, I get stuck into that rut of going to the ones I like, the old faves, over and over.  I would love to hear your recommendations an... • Robert Stemmler Pinot Noir Russian River Valley Nugent Vineyard 2005

Opaque plum hue, aromas of cherries, red berries and coffee; flavor notes of supple red and black berries, tea and chocolate, with a lingering and focused finish. Nice effort! Read More
