The roots The Nebbiolo grape, deep-rooted since ancient times in the gentle slopes of the Langhe hills in Alba area, found in Barbaresco village unique personality and features in the world. Roagna family, wine-makers since generations, is passing down from father to son the historical procedures and techniques, in keeping with the grape tradition. Yesterday Roagna family have been dealing with wine-growing and winery activity for over a century and a half, when the traditional wine-making style was started. Vincenzo, the grand-grandfather, owned the historical winery situated in the centre of the small Barbaresco village and after having harvested the grapes at the earliest foggy days (Nebbiolo comes from "nebbia" the Italian word for fog) he made wine in wood vats: this happened yesterday and it is still happening today. Years later, Giovanni Roagna and Maria Candida, moved the winery to the I Paglieri (Pajé) farm, seeing in that hill one of the highest expression of the territory. Today When Alfredo Read more »

  • I get so caught up in work that I often neglect to check in here. I'm apologizing about that!  I'm back afer a few weeks in New Zealand, which sucks up all my time not only during the trip but for the weeks prior and, as it looks, most of the week after my return. Before you ask, new Zealand was great. A young wine industry but one that has made... Read More

  • Barolo la Rocca E la Pira Roagna Castiglione Falletto Piedmont 1995

    Snoothrank:

Fresh on the nose with cool, crisp red fruits framed by notes of camphor, sassafras, and medicinal herbs. Sweet on entry with fine red fruits on the mid-palate that are a bit simple but the feel is fairly elegant with savory tannins adding complexity and excellent fresh fruit on the moderately long finish. This is subtle and takes some time to g... Read More

  • Roagna Barbaresco Paje 1996

    Snoothrank:

The 1996 Roagna Barbaresco Paje showed tobacco with dates and sweet berry on the nose. The palate was, at first, soft and then turned to sour berry with, cedar, herbal tea and hints of cherry. The finish was medium long, still showing some tannic structure, yet perfectly fresh. I would leave these for another three years in the cellar but it can... Read More

  • I am open to suggestions that are relatively easy to procure, on the dryer side, and have some level of complexity- I tend not to like a one-dimensional, flat wine.  At my last tasting of Asian influenced foods, I paired a Trefethern Dry Reisling, along with 2 other whites.  People liked it ok, but thought a bit sweet tho.  The white rhone blend...
