River Road Vineyards started in 1976 with the purchase of a 78 acre Chardonnay Vineyard on River Road about a mile from the small community of Forestville in Sonoma County. Two years later we purchased a 48 acre vineyard on River Road in Alexander Valley and replanted it to Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. We were a family farming company for the first few years, growing and selling our fruit to several Sonoma Counties premium wineries. Then came a hard lesson about agriculture, along with the weather, market conditions can change dramatically in a short period of time. A shift in grape availability to a surplus in the market was created by overplanting throughout California. Wine grapes, even high quality wine grapes, are occasionally in over supply. Out of the necessity to find a home for part of our fruit River Road Vineyards became a small winery. River Road Vineyards has grown over the years, and most of our time is now spent making and selling wine. We own and farm a 12 acre vineyard in the Russian Read more »

  • I love N. Rhone Syrah.  It's my favorite red wine in France.  But the acreage of the region is so small and the area that provide its best wines even smaller, that prices have hit the roof.  Sure, there are a few St. Josephs and Crozes-Hermitages that come in around $25, but those are either made for earlier drinking and a lot less thrilling wit... • After a brief introduction to the the state of Washington this past Monday I reported on my  visits to wineries in Walla Walla on Tuesday. Today I am reporting on visits both in Prosser, which lies roughly between Walla Walla and Seattle in the Yakima Valley as well as to wineries located basically within Seattle’s metropolitan footprint. • Pinot noir has become the great alternative. When you don’t want to give another big red wine as a gift it opens up a world of possibilities. Immediately appreciated by name alone, Pinot seems to have developed a certain cachet as the thinking man’s red wine, though there is little evidence to support that. Perhaps it comes from the history that... Read More

  • Hi, I am an accidental wine enthusiast. As part of a major remodeling project including our family room I revived my interest and enjoyment of wine. Our family room was redone using dark hickory planking and the room has a short wall next to our fireplace. This wall has always presented a challenge to make use of the space. I researched and sear... Read More

  • River Road Boschetti Vineyard Old Vine Zinfandel 2011

    Snoothrank:

Red color with middlin' density. Sure enough, this is very light on the palate. Some berry flavor, but not a lot. Maybe some it of citus--lemon. Some tannin, but not a lot. Good acid. Easy to drink. Undoubtedly one of the lightest Zins I've ever had. US$16.19 at Total WIne. Read More

  • River Road Family Vineyard and Winery Un-Oaked Chardonnay Sonoma County 2012

    Snoothrank:

This was pale gold and clear, on the nose was some tropical notes of pineapple and citris, on my palate pineapple and apricots with a crisp bright acidity that ended with a very warm long finish. Read More

  • We're heading back to (my favorite wine region) Russian River the first weekend in October and are looking for advice on what to do and what to expect.  We've been to RRV several times but only during the off season.  Is there anything special we should do at this time of year, and conversely, is there anything we should avoid? • Hello, I joined Snooth because I found it a handy look-up tool during my first days on the job.
