The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone (third person on bench wearing tall boots), a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge's production facility. At 2600', it is surrounded by the "upper vineyard." In the 1940s, William Short, a theologian, bought the abandoned winery and vineyard just below the Perrone property; he replanted several parcels to cabernet sauvignon in the late 1940s. From these vines — now the "middle vineyard"— new owners Dave Bennion and his three partners, all Stanford Research Institute engineers, made a quarter-barrel of "estate" cabernet. • On and off with differing frequency mention is made on these boards of garnacha as a choice for certain palates, and in certain contexts. Most of the mention here is pretty generic, and doesn't get down to any level of detail.Would like to suggest we take up the subject of wines from this grape with better focus. Where is good, who makes the goo... Read More

  • You're right Jon.  I'm deriving a lot of benefit from the recommendations of U-No-Hu.Speaking of whom, a few years he posted pictures of various vineyards up in his neck of the woods.  Serendipidously enough, Mrs. EMark and I were driving on State Route 12 shortly thereafter and were able to snap our own pics of the Pagani Vineyard.  I'm not goi... Very attractive garnet color. Super intro to the palate. Very much in the Zin style that I recall from the 1980s. In addition to the blackberry fruit, I get the impression that they were not too fussy during the crushing process about picking out leaves and stems. I just get the sensation that this is a rustic wine meant for relatively sim... Read More

  • It's interesting that a few new topics have popped up recently (Experiencing Cabernet Franc for one) and that my wife Sandra just today handed me an article by Dave McIntyre she cut out of a Washington Post newspaper dated 25 March 2015.  I'm starting this new topic based on this article "The wine cost four digits.  And the taste?" regarding the... • This is a report I adapted from my recap on WB. Unfortunately a few guests fell ... ... sweet so it was the 2000 Ridge Vineyards Nervo Late Picked Zinfandel. This bottle was off as VA overpowered the fruit.   Mike and Dana were staying at a home about 1/2 mile up the road so they stayed on after the other guests left. I said, who wants to try a... • Unless you bought them with aging potential in mind, a fair few of your 2013 pink and white wines won’t be drinkable by next spring. Guzzle down the last of those quick-to-turn bottles, cellar a few others, and ready yourself for the onset of fall wines. Even if you do not live in a starkly transitional climate, this a great time to think about ... Read More

Big berry nose. Sure enough, blackberry on the tip of the tongue, but, then, a silky smoothness that makes check the label. Is this Zinfandel? Yep, 77% with some Petite Sirah and some Carignane. Not the big brambly, woody blackfruited Zinfandel, but a sophisticated integration of berry flavor, resolved tannins and supporting acid. Wow. Read More
