The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone (third person on bench wearing tall boots), a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge's production facility. At 2600', it is surrounded by the "upper vineyard." In the 1940s, William Short, a theologian, bought the abandoned winery and vineyard just below the Perrone property; he replanted several parcels to cabernet sauvignon in the late 1940s. From these vines — now the "middle vineyard"— new owners Dave Bennion and his three partners, all Stanford Research Institute engineers, made a quarter-barrel of "estate" cabernet. • It being earth day tomorrow I thought this would be a fine time to explore attitude towards the whole organic/natural/biodynamic movement. I reached out to some wine professionals to get their opinions about these wines, but before I turn the stage over to them I’d like to explore the situation briefly. Before we consider the value of these wines... • Sonoma Coast Vineyards Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast Bodega Ridge 2010

    Snoothrank:

this was a phenomenal experience in my book. It's a dark complex Pinot Noir. Definitely a nice change of pace. ****I did decant this wine for almost 4 hours before drinking it**** and I feel this may have made quite a difference. The rich cherry at the front end of the wine relaxed and let the beautiful spice and darker characteristics of earthi... Read More

  • I also enjoy Ridge zin blends. I have enjoyed Paraduxx "Postmark" zin/cab blends. The Howell Mtn version is quite nice, especially in the 2007 vintage.I can't believe no one mentioned Biale or Martinelli. Martinelli's Jackass and Jackass Hill vineyards produce some concentrated large scale zins, but from a value perspective their Giuseppe & Luis... Read More

  • Ridge Triangle Carignane Geyserville Vineyard Sonoma County 2011

    Snoothrank:

My 4/8, the groups 4/8 Sweet oak greets the nose with hint of coconut and suntan lotion over blueberry fruit that shows some subtle spicy character. Bright and focused in the mouth, theres a nice faceted feel here though not much complexity beyond an attractive blend of tart blueberry pie filling, vanilla and a hint of latex. Theres a nice tou... • Yep, OT is right, the last time I had Turley I bought some old vintages for a themed tasting--nothing more recent than 2003.  I did receive a gift of the Juvenile, which is Cali designated, from a more recent vintage.  Probably 2009.  Good, not great--it's the "supermarket" Turley, like R'wood Vintners Blend but 2.5x the price.  It was fine, but... • Ridge Vineyards 'Three Valley' Three Valleys Zinfandel 2010

    Snoothrank:

Deep purple colour. Intense nose with notes of blackberry and burnt caramel/caedarwood. More of the same on the palate. My other half thought the tannin was just a little rough. Medium long length. Expected a little more from this wine given it's price up here in Canada. Read More
