The history of Ridge Vineyards begins in 1885, when Osea Perrone (third person on bench wearing tall boots), a doctor who became a prominent member of San Francisco's Italian community, bought 180 acres near the top of Monte Bello Ridge. He terraced the slopes and planted vineyards; using native limestone, he constructed the Monte Bello Winery, producing the first vintage under that name in 1892. This unique cellar, built into the mountainside on three levels, is Ridge's production facility. At 2600', it is surrounded by the "upper vineyard." In the 1940s, William Short, a theologian, bought the abandoned winery and vineyard just below the Perrone property; he replanted several parcels to cabernet sauvignon in the late 1940s. From these vines — now the "middle vineyard"— new owners Dave Bennion and his three partners, all Stanford Research Institute engineers, made a quarter-barrel of "estate" cabernet. • Ridge Geyserville 2013

    Snoothrank:

Very interesting wine. For those who recall the days when a Zinfandel was characterized as brambly, this aint it. The front label indicates that this wine is 73% Zin, 17% Carignan, 9% PS and 1% Mourvedre. This is a pretty gentle wine. A fair amount of red berry fruit on introduction, but nowhere near the tannin that I would expect. Not real... Read More

  • St. Cosme wines have gotten a ton of good press, but they haven't done it for me, even down at the CdR level, where they are pretty inexpensive.JD, I enjoyed the Ramspeck you gave me, memorable because I don't usually go for Merlot at all.  It impressed me as a really good wine for the price, a great choice if you want to have a burger or steak ... • Al, some old school winemakers do it right and treat Zinfandel like it should ... (A. Rafanelli), Paul Draper (Ridge Vineyards) etc know how to make wines of great purity and balance that age gracefully.  The secondary characteristics of aged wine aren't for everyone but when done right they just sing. Most mass market Zinfandels are made to dr... • Ferrari Carano Sky High Ranch Pinot Noir Mendocino Ridge 2014

    Snoothrank:

Nicely floral notes of violets and ripe cherry with notes of sweet spice on the nose. This has some good acidity coming through and is a touch medicinal with notes of licorice, ripe cherry, blueberry and a creamy finish. Herbal and oaky with soft through through the mid palate. Read More

  • Ridge Lytton Springs 2012

    Snoothrank:

This one lands very comfortably on the tongue before detecting flavors of red raspberry and stone fruit mid-palate. Surprisingly light on tannin. (?) However, strong acid tartness is detected in the rear palate. I have a few more bottles of this and look forward to see how it changes. Read More
