Read more Twenty miles of cycling in a day is probably doable but on the outer edge of what I would want to do in mid-August.  I surmise it will be a little harder than my spinning workouts...in an air-conditioned gym...with TVs and fans all around.In that case the location of your accdomodations is critical to your itineraryif you plan on biking from spot to spot. If you take Old Redwood Hwy north you can stop at J Vineyards and Rodney Strong on the same property, then hit Foppiano and Acorn up the road. A couple miles further up is downtown Healdsburg where you have tasting rooms galore. Seghesio, Road House, Holdredge, Sapphire Hill, Wilson, Topel, KJ, Toad Hollow, Thumbprint etc...    (hide)

Read moreHi everyone,I'm a newish lurker who jumped on a great fare to San Francisco from my little pocket of Missouri wine country near St. Louis in mid-August with the intent of visiting the Sonoma area as a solo traveler.  I will be arriving early afternoon on a Thursday and staying until early Monday morning.As a solo female traveler and a red fan - Pinot Noirs esepcially - hoping to maximize my travel dollar, do some bicycling for fun, fitness, and the ability to imbibe just a bit, and experience a variety of wineries, I would be most grateful for recommendations, including:Should I stay in Santa Rosa or Windsor?What are not-to-miss wineries?How much can I do from a bicycle as a moderately fit cyclist, i.e. how many days should I plan to use a bike? Do I need to rent a car, or could I use transit to Santa Rosa or Windsor and rely upon a bicycle for the relatively short period I'll be there?I am a little embarrassed by the "novice-ness" of my questions but am most, most open to and grateful for guidance.Thank you! Read moreThe boards' favorite California Cabernet Sauvignon producer has recently released their 2008 Howell Mountain and Napa Valley wines. Randy Dunn is one of the most respected winemakers in California by those "in the know". Though he keeps a low profile and his wines aren't known for being hyped, I get the impression that his wines are slowly increasing in popularity. Critics: As far as I know, only Galloni's scores are in from the Wine Advocate, and they're pretty high. 98+ Howell Mountain  -  96 Napa ValleyPrice: This has been known as one of the great values in Napa for years, but with these 08' releases, we're seeing the pricing inch closer to the $100 level. Average pricing is $80 for the Napa Valley, and $94 for the Howell MountainAccording to Dunn's website they typically produce 2,500 cases of the Howell Mountain and 1,500 cases of the Napa Valley release. With 2008 being a lower yielding vintage for California, but also one of high concentration and quality, it's probably pretty safe to say there's not a ton of this stuff at the retailers, especially if you factor in that the winery has their own private club members.So, with all that said, will you be buying?     (hide)

Read moreThursday’s issue of the Los Angeles Times had two interesting articles on the California wine industry.In the “Food” section (once a week occurrence) there was an article on the Temecula wine region.  Temecula is about 40 miles inland and between Los Angeles and San Diego.  In the 70s various vineyards were planted.  The most notable of these was Callaway started by the founder of the golf equipment company.  In the 90s, however, the area was devastated by the invasion of a grasshopper-like critter called the glassy winged sharpshooter.  This killed a lot of wineries and vineyards.  However, the area is making a comeback.  It is a relatively easy drive from either Los Angeles or San Diego, and, so, day trips for lunch and wine tasting are easily doable.  Also, according to the article, cruise ships visiting San Diego will have excursions to the Temecula wine country.The major point of the article, though, was the “battle” between makers of “pop” wines and makers of “serious” wines.  Apparently, it is quite popular to visit one winery named Wilson and taste an almond sparkling wine concoction that, the way I read the article, is sourced from Lodi (in California’s Central Valley). The thought of drinking almond-flavored wine does not particularly appeal to me (that’s what Amaretto is for).  However, I do not begrudge it of anybody if that is what snaps your carrot.  I endorse any trend that increases the popularity of wine.On the other side of the “battle” are “serious” Temecula wine makers such as Joe Hart.  I have to say that while Hart wines are not going to challenge as world beaters, they are very respectable and I have enjoyed every one that I have tried.The other article was more “political” in nature.  It appeared on Page 1.  Apparently, there is an attempt by two different companies to convert 2,000 acres of redwood forest in northern Sonoma County (near the community of Annapolis) into pinot noir vineyards.  Not surprisingly, this is causing some polarization among locals.  The two companies referenced in the article are Cordoniu (of Spain) owner of Napa Valley winery Artesa and a Napa-based company called Premier Pacific Vineyards.  It sounds like this is is a real estate company.  The article references a development of "high end estates" that Premier Pacific is also planning in this Northern Somoma County area.I am somewhat familiar with the area.  My wife and I have rented beach houses in the nearby town of Gualala.  It is a spectacularly beautiful area.  So, right now, I am on the fence about this project.  I was wondering, though, if anybody from the area could add to my insight on this situation.    (hide)
