Ravenswood Winery

No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. • Ravenswood Zinfandel Barricia 2012

    Snoothrank:

This is about a 30-35 dollar Zin and it's well worth it. Very odiferous of ripe berries, cassis, floral and spice. It's taste is of dark fruits, earth, dust, lively acids to maintain it's freshness and tannins that hit the mark. A lovely cranberry spice coats the mouth with a slight lingering of bing cherry. • Are you staying at the SMI? Lucky dog! Since you are staying in Sonoma proper maybe just hit some local wineries. Sebastiani has the history, gives tours, does pairings and it's just a couple blocks off Sonoma Plaza.Out in the wine ghetto on 8th St East is Gundlach Bundschu or GunBun as the locals call it. Another historic site started in the 19... Read More

  • Today I bought a case of Three Wine Co. Live Oak Zinfandel.  I took another vintage of this to OT's Old Vine Old Wine Offline a while back and, at $20, it is a serious bargain and an adventure.  Matt Cline (one of the Clines of the eponymous winery) and some other makers saved two out of the ten acres (so, less than a hectare) of 125 year old pr... • Ravenswood 'Besieged' Red Blend 2013

  • Ravenswood Dickerson Zinfandel Napa Valley 2003

    Snoothrank:

Fairly big brambly nose. Quite fruity introduction to the palatedark berries, a bit of peach and, definitely, fig. However, I would not characterize this one as jammy. Noticeable heatmid- to rear palate--indicates to me that it has peakedi.e., disintegration that I have noticed in stored wines is starting and, so, the alcohol is noticeable. T... Read More
