Ravenswood Winery

No Wimpy Wines. That’s the motto of Ravenswood Winery, a winery that believes that white Zinfandel’s best quality is that it preserved Old Vine Zinfandel during Prohibition. That’s not just some flashy name either: Joel Peterson, founder and winemaker of Ravenswood and nicknamed “the Godfather of Zin,” lives it every day. He spent 15 tireless years trying to get his winery to turn a profit, and while his first harvest was in 1976, it was in 1992 that he finally quit his other job at a clinical lab, splitting his life in two the whole time.

Financing the operation was always difficult. For many years, the winery moved around, trying to find a cheap place to house their operations. It wasn’t until their Vintners Blend program was launched that they were finally able to settle down with the money they made, in 1991. Starting in the mid 80s, Vintners Blend was a less expensive wine, thanks to the fact that it was created by blending many grapes from different Read more »

  • Ravenswood Dickerson Zinfandel Napa Valley 2003

    Snoothrank:

Fairly big brambly nose. Quite fruity introduction to the palatedark berries, a bit of peach and, definitely, fig. However, I would not characterize this one as jammy. Noticeable heatmid- to rear palate--indicates to me that it has peakedi.e., disintegration that I have noticed in stored wines is starting and, so, the alcohol is noticeable. T... Read More

  • Ravenswood Zinfandel Sonoma Old Vines 2011

    Snoothrank:

A bit tight on the nose with slightly smoky and toasty wood spice aromas layered over slightly beef, plum framed medicinal cherry fruit. rather light and fresh in the mouth with an ease about it and lovely flavors of raspberry and cherry layered over the well judged wood notes. The acids are nicely done here, supportive and helping to drive the ... Read More

  • Ravenswood Zinfandel Lodi Old Vine 2012

    Snoothrank:

Effusively fruity on the nose with briar toned blackberry and plummy fruit along with streaks of vanilla, caramel, and a hint of coconut. This is wide open in the mouth yet not opulent with a touch of chewiness to the rich, ripe briar and tar tinged cherry and blackberry fruit that shows remarkable clarity on the palate at this price point. A l... Read More

  • Ravenswood Zinfandel Old Vines Napa Valley 2012

    Snoothrank:

A touch balsamic on the nose with warm, powder sugar covered black berry and raspberry aromas and just a hint of wood smoke adding detail. A bit thick and chewy on entry, this shows lovely depth on the palate with a bit of black spice and hints of briar wood layered over brambly fruit. A bit on the tannic side, but certainly remaining in harmony... Read More

  • So you're not a pink sludge fan?  ;-(I'm curious that nobody's mentioning any of the Ravenswood offerings. Was wondering why. Can't say I've had many of them since he sold the winery, but my question stands.Paso Rhone attempts are not anything I've had success with, other than maybe the Perrin family operation, but then again I'm far away right ... • Ravenswood 'Lodi' Zinfandel 2011

    Snoothrank:

The wine is a deep ruby color in the glass with very nice clarity. The nose is classic Lodi Zin, rich ripe black fruit, blackberries, black cherry, blueberries and plum over a smoky layer of leather and cedar intertwined with some green grass and herbs. The taste is just a pleasure from the first sip, with rich jammy fruit bursting forward tha... Read More

  • Terrence, for under $20 I like Oak Ridge, but that might be difficult to find.Cline and Ravenswood are both highly regarded Zinfandel makers that are fairly widely distributed.  Both of them have multiple bottlings that come in at different price points, but both of them have offerings for less than $20.  I don't know if Seghesio, another terrif...
