While Rancho Zabaco Winery is a fledgling winery, with only a decade under its belt, the land’s history is rich. Given to a 14-year-old boy in 1843, the 17,000 acre land in northern Sonoma County was originally farmland. Dubbed “Tzabaco Rancho” by its owner, it was the basis for Rancho Zabaco’s name and future success. Founder and winemaker Eric Cinnamon devotes his time to the land, producing only the wines that grow best in the area: Sauvignon Blanc and Zinfandel. Their land in the Russian River Valley is devoted to Sauvignon Blanc, while Dry Creek Valley, the “Zin Zone,” consistently produces world-class Zinfandel.

Rancho Zabaco Winery on Snooth

  • "OT, do you drink Gallo?"Yep, I do, as do many here. Gallo brands are far reaching. Look what's on my countertop right now... Frei Bros is a Gallo brand, so is Louis Martini. That Rancho Zabaco that EMark drank the other night, you guessed it, Gallo brand. They are a huge operation that produces a lot of pedestrian wine. They also make wines on ... Read More

  • Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel Russian River Valley 2004

    Snoothrank:

Fairly fruity nose showing cherry and red raspberry. Not nearly as fruity on the palate, especially, on introduction. Introduction is very benignmaybe some light woody things. As the wine moves to mid-palate I do get the cherry/raspberry thing, but it is a pleasant hint, not a big announcement. Then there is almost some mintinesstannin, but ... Read More

  • Rancho Zabaco Zinfandel Sonoma Valley Monte Rosso Monte Rosso Vineyard 2005

    Snoothrank:

Somewhat earthy nose with a bit of berry scent and, maybe, even some orange blossom scent. Upfront berry flavors, but as the wine moves towards the back of the tongue and mid-palate there is some minerality and even some clove overtones. Some slight bitterness on the back of the palate. A bit of an unusual Zinfandel. Read More

  • At the risk of incurring the wrath of some of the other contributors, my standard for restaurant wine pricing has always been 2 X retail--and by "retail" I mean street price, not winery price.  As mentioned some of the wines on that list come right it at 2 X retail.  So, if you know the street price of the wines in which you are interested, then... • Rancho Zabaco Dry Creek Zinfandel 2011

    Snoothrank:

Chilled then brought to correct temperature. I let the wine breathe for 30 minutes before drinking. Deep cherry red. Smell: Almost salty, blackberry, pepper. Taste: blackberry, smooth, I can taste a little of the alcohol, medium bodied. Finish is dry, taste the tannens, still taste a lot of the blackberry notes. Read More

  • Being a cab lover I am hesitant to stray from what I like. On a recent occasion I had the opportunity to try a Zinfandel and to my amazement, it had some of the same attributes of the cabernets I love so well. I perused Snooth and stopped on a particular zin from Bogle vineyards. Gregory Dal Piaz gave it a nice rating and being a member of Snoot... Read More
